There's a huge cottonwood one block over from us that towers above a house, leaning towards it. I wouldn't live in that house with that tree there. It's probably 100 yrs old. A similar tree at the end of our block came down early one morning about 15 years ago. It took out a telephone pole like it was a matchstick. Lucky no one was in its way. The guy in that car was REALLY unlucky.

Where I grew up in west Toronto. There was the largest tree I ever remember seeing in eastern Canada a few yards over from ours. The owner an older lady could not afford to have it removed from her back yard. Eventually it came down with the city doing it. Took several large cranes to separate higher branches themselves the size of good sized trees and lower them down.
An average branch of that tree would have demolished that mercedes if it fell as well. In fact just as well as that whole tree did. Memory is hard to remember the width of the trunk at the base after all these years. Ten feet or more seems about right. Strange it was never hit by lightning as well as severe thunderstorms were not uncommon in our area. Our own house was hit several times with limited damage. Or perhaps a tree of that size can take a hit and survive it. |

A local physician was killed by a falling branch a few months back while driving along in his car with one of his sons. I believe the son was uninjured. Just lives about a block and a half from me.

People and their old *^(*)^*()& trees.
I get crap all the time when I saw down old rotting trees from neighbors, but all they freaken do is fall. Oh no they are so pretty we love our trees. Bet the neighbors would have been all pissy if the DOT cut down that POS. Whenever I build a house a clear cut any tree that could fall and hit the house, or if its a small lot the entire thing. Plant new little trees if you like them so much, the big ones are just weeds that have no business within 100ft of a structure.

Thats to bad, I live in Portland and down by the Oregon coast, we had the largest tallest sitka spruce tree in the U.S. it was a Small Oregon state park and you could walk around it, It was larger than most California Red Woods
and it fell over a few years ago, nobody knew it was going to happen, the park was fully open till the day it fell.
