Screwiest thing I've seen lately.

I'm all for a clean environment but I feel we are screwing ourselves if this system comes about because we are competing on a WORLD market and the world market does NOT jump through hoops for the environment. More justification for a flat tax in my opinion.

Has anyone ever looked at the chit that one volcano dumps into the atmosphere when it blows it's top? For all practical purposes there are ways to clean up the environment without unleveling the playing field. If the US gov't was serious about doing something to help the environment they would outlaw V8 engines accross the board in all personal vehicles/light pickup trucks. Oh yea that's right, the US government has a vested interest in GM who makes more money on the overweight, bloated, full sized, v8 engined vehicles they sell. It would be a conflict of interest. Anyway, another way would be to require everyone in the US that fills out a tax form to register their mileage driven every year on their tax form and require $.50/mile for every mile driven. If you don't like to pay the tax, don't drive. Ya'll remember a few years ago the gov't allowed tax deductions for those big gas guzzlers.

carbon emission tax

You're right about the volcano. Emissions today IMO are highly over-rated- they've become an agenda as opposed to an end. Modern engines are already 99% clean, some actually clean the air in dirty cities. Worrying about emissions today, in light of all the other issues we face is like worrying about a little crack in your driveway while your house is on fire.

The real solution to reduce emissions is population reduction. I don't see anyone stepping up to the podium to talk about that.

I wrote a satire article about EPA taking Mother Nature to court for a volcanic event in Japan a few years ago.
Was on a site known as Election Ink that is defunct now.

Obama is/has killed US coal but they are lucky enough to be able to export to China , Japan and a whole host of other countries that could give a damn about coal pollution. US green weenies are pressuring US lawmakers to stop this as it just moves pollution to the other side of the planet.

It's about rational environmental policies and jobs or you will never get enough revenue back into the Fed gov't to come close to begin to pay down the debt.

Well then, why don't you lead the way and set an example for others to do what is ultimately required by reducing your population footprint?

$.50 additional federal excise tax on every gallon sold.

That'll cut back on those V8 Shltboxes that get 12 mpg.

Done.

They would pay down the debt with it, of course.

Sadly, it only amounts to $67B

Damn, why didn't I think of that -- politicians would spend tax dollars wisely!

I'm all for a 1 cent tax per gallon ... doubling every two years Put people on notice that they have 20 years or so to switch to fuels that aren't foul relics of the 20th century.

How about a government made car. The same for everyone (if approved that you "need" one). They could be Volts. Yeah, Voltswagens. It was a hit before.

Forgetting the sarcasm, people should be allowed to buy whatever car they want. HOWEVER, prices of dirty fuels should be artificially raised, and clean energy artificially lowered so the average person won't be able to afford more than 500 mi/yr of fossil fueled driving.
