Subaru 2.0 diesel

Sounds impressive. Might make it to the US.

Quote:
Currently Subaru sells its 2.0-liter 4-cylinder boxer diesel in Europe where it makes 145-hp and 258 ft-lbs of torque and gets around 34/41 mpg (city/highway) in vehicles like he Forrester 2.0D.

I have lingering fantasies of finally building the Meyers Manx of my dreams and putting in a Subaru engine. This diesel would make an interesting car. About 1200 lbs curb weight with that kind of power? Would be an expensive toy but oh well.

I'll believe it when I see it. The first few words are positive but the rest of the article lists reasons why it won't make it to the US.

Back in 2008 when I was looking to trade my 2005 Outback 2.2 in on a new model, (both seen here)

I first contacted Subaru of NA to see if a diesel model was on the near or distant horizon, for American buyers.

i was told definately NOT, never going to happen.

So I reluctantly bought the new '08 seen above, a 2.5i PZEV premium, a gasser, and got one of the newly designed Outbacks last year...an '11 2.5i Premium - all 3 were great!

They did great in snow with the boxer engine and AWD.

Just not quite right for my lifestyle, which doesn't include kayaks, golden retrievers, river rafting, skiing, mountain bicycles, camping, skydiving, climbing rock walls and all that stuff. (so I got the Mercedes e350 instead)

But when I was in France in June this year, in Colmar (in the wine country), I saw an Outback that looked like my '08 parked and so I ran over behind it to look at the tailgate, and sure enough, there it was:

The script said-

"Diesel".

I gather that bio-diesel enthusiasts are going to lengths to get the engine. This group claims to sell it, their web site is a bit rough:

Mazda also has an interesting diesel that is rumored to be under consideration for US distribution. Has a 2.2 that is said to be only mated to manuals at the moment which might limit US sales. They're going to run it in LeMans next year.

There's a recent thread on it. The engine has trouble with passing diesel fuel into the crankcase.

There was a recent thread by the CLKman ..

He has been having trouble passing fuel OUT of his crankcase, and described it in painfully graphic detail.

Well maybe...... if I get to take care of the FRONT end and YOU get to take care of the BACK end.

The sales brochure for my 2011 Outback actually had a big headline on page 2 when you opened the cover:

NEW CAR SMELL SOON TO BE REPLACED WITH WET DOG SMELL

(The brochure for my '11 Mercedes benz e-class had NO such langauge.

Just fancy that. )

I've been reading about Subaru diesels and it's been a common finding to have broken crankshafts at an early "age". I wonder what's going on. I didn't read much further because I was searching for something else.
