Takes time to find out if the who was really right. People can change in unexpected ways as well. Sometimes getting even better. Not much in this area is written in stone.

Never dated in HS or college. Few prospects after that, and never could hold on to a woman for more than a couple of months.

Met someone later who never got along with me for more than a week at a time...we would fight on Fridays and make up on Mondays! Somehow, that lasted for six months!

Was too intimidated to "seal the deal" with such a fragile relationship, but we shopped at a jewelry store, and I picked out an engagement ring, and gave it to her right then, telling her that it was a "friendship commitment ring"...she knew better and told her sisters! We picked a wedding date in a casual conversation a few weeks later.

That was over 20 years ago! Still hitched to the same gal!

In this day of airplanes pulling proposal signs, and other extravagant methods, mine was pedestrian, indeed. 1970 Attending college in center City, Philly with not much money. We walked to a nice ( not expen$ive) beef restaurant somewhere near Chestnut and Broad, then walked out to the Art Museum--a favorite haunt ( and cheap date). On one knee on the steps to the Art Museum --this was long before Rocky made the Art Museum famous.
Right person. Simple proposal, simple lifestyle.

Yeah, im not one for the excessive proposal, I think we would both find that over the top and ridiculous. Im thinking more along the lines of asking when we take a vacation early next year and we are alone hiking or something.
The only person who I think is important to hear a proposal is the woman in question, i could never understand the huge fanfare proposal in stadiums and the like. After all, its about the two people alone, not what other people think

I have a friend who did just that. They were having a conversation about future plans. He drops the " We should get married" than goes on to the plans HE has already made for the wedding and the honeymoon, and so on. The girl finally takes in what he said and stops him, " Whoa, can we back up a little bit? In all that stuff, did you just ask me to marry you?"

This isn't very cliche, but it's pretty cool. It's a friend of mine from theatre, proposing to his soon-to-be wife. I wasn't part of this show, unfortunately, because this would have been awesome to experience in person.

Look honey if your lucky and I am desperate we could get married.

Actually knew a girl one time that always got that expression backwards. I suggested she just cease using it. Since she tended to get quite hostile about it when she did.

Actually proposing is not that big an issue if you think about it. Other than the chance of rejection. Or even worse continious laughter from her. It can go your way.

I was under my 1951 chev after changing a rear axle seal. You had to put a clip on the axle inside the differential to finish up. I saw a pair of legs so rolled out. There was a girl there and she asked me to marry her. No kidding.

I asked her why she wanted to marry me. Aparently her mother had told her she had to get out and get married. She was of european extraction so it may have been some form of a custom.

I heard through the grapevine she was married not that much later. We were both sixteen if I remember. I actualy felt sorry for her so did not attempt to work the situation.

Another girl I dated a couple of times made strong suggestions she wanted to get married. This was long before birth control pills where marketed. I had decided that I always wanted to know where my kids where. Plus I was not going to get railroaded into a situation I did not want. Pregnancy was a pretty common reason guys got married in those days. You where expected to do it. I guess a lot of them worked out well enough.

I didn't know they used that design that far back. I recall doing that on my mom's 1973 Chevelle and reading that it was added to vehicles because prior to that a rear bearing failure could result in the axle -- and wheel, tire, hub and brake drum -- leaving your vehicle.

went well enough. I was stricken with a violent cold on our trip, lying in bed sick, hid the ring in my shoe, couldnt find it down at the toe, requiring me to produce the shoe and tap the heel, ect ect, just imagine all kinds of romantic elements that don't including sneezing, blowing noses, coughing ect during the proposal.

She said sure, but not here. (we happened to be in Vegas) Thus my dream of a $52 dollar drive-thru wedding were hopelessly dashed.

The ring was also too small. had to wait till after vacation to get it resized.
