I am not sure why trucks still have the frame....simplicity in offering different motors, beds, etc?
I'm pretty sure it is built that way to allow it to have more load carrying and pulling capability. I've never seen a Freightliner with a unibody.

And it also allows FL to adjust their basic line for other options such as different engines, transmissions, PTO packages, etc.

90% of all Freightliners (and other OTR rigs) are customer designated packages.

I tend not to occupy myself with worrying about whether people who bought trucks needed them or not. Creature comforts are nice and I kinda wish my car had more. I was cheap when I bought it though so its a base model. I really wish I had a truck but only really cause I could use it. I have to borrow my dads old f150. Since I didnt have one I loaded a jackhammer into the trunk of the mazda a few weeks ago and it fit just fine. It would just be nice to have something to throw the bike in the bed when I take it around town instead of having to take the wheels off every time. Also my friend just dropped 30k this year on a brand new F150 super crew fully loaded except it didnt have navigation and and a sunroof or 4x4. We took it to Indianapolis this year and it was great. It held four people with all of our luggage and camping gear in awesome comfort. I sure as heck dont want to pay that kind of money for a car but I am happy to be able to ride in one!

Probably the reason I get on a rant about the humongous unnecessary trucks is because the parking lot at work is totally littered with them to a point that it's difficult to find a parking place. Many people who drive them will kill two and sometimes three parking spaces with them because they are incapable of parking them. Makes me wonder if they can handle them well enough on the road to keep from running over me.

Don't get me wrong. I feel that people can drive whatever they want. If they can afford to buy it, put fuel in it and FIND A PLACE TO PARK IT, I don't care if they drive an 18 wheeler.

For someone like you, sounds like you need a truck.

I don't either, until I am inconvienced or endanged by one. For example, waiting to turn left behind one and not being able to see through it or around it.

"Damn! I could have turned left WITH that asshat , but now I'm stuck waiting for the next safe gap in oncoming traffic. I am sure glad he bought that pickup. We need more of those on the road to speed up traffic. Oh yeah, and he's doing his part to keep oil prices low, too"

that's what I think...probably five times a day...yup.

And then there's the other five times a day when they are tailgating me with those wonderful illuminating headlights at eyelevel. Makes the commute that much more enjoyable.

It has wind up windows, rubber mats, cloth seats, no pushbutton locks or any of that stuff. It DOES have a cruise control and a manual climate control air conditioner.

My kind of truck! Keep It Simple Stupid(KISS.)

BTW, what REALLY makes me a wierdo around here is that I only use the truck when I need a truck. I'm about one of three people in the county who don't think that they need a four door, dually one ton 4X4 to get them back and forth to work. Wait a minute, I just described what they use it for, not why they bought it. They bought it as a status symbol, except for some of them who actually NEED such a truck, in which case it's obvious why they bought it.
Or maybe they bought it to just frighten Lexus drivers and make them spill their Latte's.

Does anyone really NEED a Cessna 140?

This being said, I'm a cheapskate worrywart. Driving something that burns 10-15 mpg on a daily basis would give me permanent ulcers.

If God had meant for man to fly, He would of given us round trip tickets.

You do realize the bigger diesel fullsizes can return high teens in the city cycle, and low twenties in the freeway cycle.

And btw, I do drive one of those big'old trucks your talking about... See my sig for details.

Whoop-dee-doo. For the same price or cheaper I can buy a diesel car that gets about 40 mpg combined (no, not the 240D, but any number of VWs).

Not sure exactly what the status is with a truck myself. Now if you are talking about an S-class or Maybach, yes. A truck? Hardly.

Here is a possible reason. Do you want to buy a truck for hauling and a car for daily driving? I'd be wondering about maintenance and insurance and parking space, not to mention cost. OTOH, as an "all in 1", a truck does make sense. 1 space instead of 2 or 3 or 4 and 1 insurance and 1 maintenance.

Talk to my adopted parents. They will park their vehicle in the middle of BFE simply because they don't want door dings. On top of that, they purposely park into 2 spots so there are no people around them that can ding their car. It is not an issue of "can I handle parking it" as opposed to "can I make sure you don't scratch or ding my vehicle". And yes, they do that for the truck, car or whatever they drive. If they drove a unicycle and could find a way to spread it out to 2 spaces so you don't come near it, they will.
