An iPhone fan's month with Windows Phone: Week one | Macworld

Before the Windows Phone arrived, I wondered whether slogging through 30 days with the Lumia 920 would be a chore. That’s no longer a concern.


It’d be exaggerating to say that I’m actually thinking the opposite, that I might not be willing to go back to the iPhone 5 at the end of this experiment. But, to my surprise, I’m actually willing to consider that I could feel that way.


Despite its perhaps lackluster adoption in the marketplace, the Windows Phone OS itself is certainly no joke, and the Lumia 920 is a great device. Far from being a chore, my time with this phone is actually fun.

Apple and MS - two sides of the same coin. Apple under Jobs invented computing as a prison, and Jobs got his comeuppance for that. Shame he didn't retire sooner. It would be ironic is Ballmer got MS, and we got to watch him gradually twitch out before he withered away.

Only good choice for now is -- Android.

If I own it, I don't want to be protected from installing whatever I like "for my own mother****ing good." Nanny states are bad enough. Nanny software companies make me want to take a dump on the graves of their founders after drinking a bottle of ExLax.

I spent some time on a Lumia 900 and a Lumia 920.


IMO, fantastic unit(s). The display is only of the sharpest I have seen, the device itself feels well built and looks GREAT, and the OS is fast and easy to use.

The only downside - I feel aftermarket support for them is lacking (end user customization). Where with a droid and iphone, you have a pretty substantial aftermarket for apps and accessories, you don't quite have that with the WinPhones. (and even some droids are still lacking here)

If they had a bigger, better app store (and my corporate email worked on it), I would still be using the Lumia... But since they don't, I am on my Phablet... And going to be getting a Lenovo K900.

I made the jump to the 920 about two months ago. The thing has worked flawlessly and I love the wireless charging pad, very very convenient.

My only real gripe about it is cellular signal. My GF lives in an area with spotty coverage, and my old Samsung Jack would catch a bar most of the time, occasionally two. The Nokia almost always shows no connection whatsoever, but sometimes a single bar of Edge coverage. In either case it's unusable as a smartphone, and if someone calls me on it, I don't even try to answer, just call them back from her landline.

My personal cell phone (LG Android/Virgin) is almost dead there, too. Her phone is a Verizon crackberry, which usually has enough of a signal to carry on a slightly-broken-up phone call.

The mail apps on the Nokia are very cool, we're an exchange house at work so that was a no-brainer. Configure as many accounts as you like, pin them as separate tiles for quick access. Nice.

I've had the Lumia 822 Windows 8 phone from Verizon since December. There really is no difference between the 920 and the 822...only different carriers.

That being said...I do miss some of the apps like the PNC Virtual Wallet. It allowed me to check my account easily. But that's about the only drawback.

I added the 32gig chip to increase the storage from 16 to 48gig.

The display is sharp and clean, interface is smooth, and the music player is well thought out. 4g speed rocks, and unlike my old Droid, it automatically connects to the wifi networks I've authorized...which is great since Verizon has capped me to 2gig of 4g per month at the price I was getting unlimited with my old phone and plan.

Since I no longer stream music on it while out and about, the added memory works well for me...I load up a few thousand songs on it and go.

It works well with Windows 8 on my laptop, making transfers of files a matter of drag and drop then sync.

I also like the cordless charging it has...

My 15 dollar tracfone makes phone calls and I get a signal almost everywhere. It's around here somewhere, I saw it a couple of weeks ago. Maybe I dropped it in the henhouse again. Or somewhere.

Honestly, I've considered going that route (basic candybar phone), and just carrying a tablet or touch-screen thinbook for email and Internet. If something is on fire, I'll be called or texted anyway, so constant access to e-mail isn't at critical as one would think.

I don't know who all Tracfone is partnered with for signals, but in AZ mine gets signal virtually everywhere. Wife has an iPhone now that's on TMobile prepaid, and she borrows my cheapie when she can't get any bars.

TracFone is partnered with AT&T, VZW, T-Mobile and Sprint depending on the geographic area. CDMA phones are with VZW and perhaps Sprint.
