I'm pleased with my windows phone platform devices. Outdated/obsolescence is irrelevant as I have observed. My HTC Trophy is 2 years old and still running well and as smoothly as the first day I turned it on. I have had no problems with damage or breaking. I am careful with the device. I've never made an insurance claim with a phone so I cannot speak to that effect. Only in parts of rural PA have I had signal problems.

Now my friend has an Android HTC Thunderbolt. That is LOL.

That being said. i still prefer using the PC/Keyboard over the phone.

My view of smart phones:

* The cost is relative to the tasks it performs. With mail, messaging, web access and tethering, I can get work done in most major cities and between.
* They have survived my attempts to kill them. I've owned two Palm OS and two iPhones, a 3GS and a 4S, all survived daily use.
* No problems with reading the screen and my 3GS still runs apps.
* Growing list of 4G coverage

All thus being said, my next phone will be an old school dumb phone. Going with a tablet or touch screen thinbook for Internet and other work on the road.

Economics is a poor argument for having an antiquated pc, you can buy so much computing power for hardly anything these days that is not even relevant anymore. A modern smartphone has more computing power than the average 7-8 year old PC.
I'm just saying that with image processing, ain't no LAN or Internet wide and fast enough to handle the data processing demand without significant data transfer time delays. I have 4 TB if RAID and geez, something like 40-odd GB of RAM on an 8 processor PC. I used to make the lights dim when I turned it on (not really). So I use sneakerware to send and receive most files -- don't want to wait on the LAN. Just got the LAN upgraded to some fiber optic something or other but it's still too slow to operate on a 500 GB image file.

The funny thing is that I know shyte-all about computers. I'm a user that knows how to call IT and those folks will wave wands and invoke satanic forces to keep me running.

Time to step it up to a solid state drive Bot. In a few years terabyte SSDs should only cost a grand or so!

Yeah, prices are coming down pretty quickly though. Besides, booting into Windows in under 10 seconds is priceless!

SSD boot drive and drive for files that are being worked on currently, spinners for storage.

Same... Intel has been doing a RAID kind of setup on a lot of laptops as well called RapidStorage i believe. Pretty much just uses the SSD as a giant cache. I usually end up doing away with it. But it is nice for the average home user.

Run an xp virtual machine that way you can get work done. Heh

I need to get office 2010, I can get a license for $10 through work. I'd rather go for 2010 since its stable and has had a few years of getting the bugs worked out. I've been using 2007 for the last three years without and issue.

Nothing wrong with XP, though Windows 7 Pro has an XP VM practically built in (well, easily downloaded and installed anyway).

Windows 7 is now the business/enterprise standard. At my workplace we are almost complete with refreshing all Pc's to windows 7. All legacy software has already been tested and moved to servers for virtual machine use.

It's pretty sweet. I have a virtual machine running widows 98 so I can play roller coaster tycoon. Lol

Yeah, that's about right. Seems that alternate OS's from Redmond are utter crap. 2000 was decent, ME was crap, XP was decent, Vis-duh was garbage, 7 is decent, 8 is mediocre and inappropriate for the desktop in many people's view.
