They need to invent one for teenagers that if it is moving more than 5 MPH it won't work. And one for blondes too.

Um.... she created a battery that could charge in 20 seconds. Right?

Not a charger, but a battery.

I love reading about kids this sharp and inventive. Imagine a high school senior inventing such a device, congratulations to her!

I think I was struggling with a papermache volcano that created realish lava at that point.

There are all kinds of of issues like the ir or internal resistance. Especially of a battery trying to charge like that. Most batteries I own would instantainiously heat and react. I would not purchase stock based on this approach.

Its a supercapacitor that takes a charge, not something that charges your battery in 20 seconds. Who knows how long it will last--very misleading article.

No, she created a super capacitor. There is one thing not clear from the article. How does the capacitor charge the battery any faster. There is probably an explanation that the author does not understand, thus cannot articulate.

Indeed and if you have a lot of these capacitors (that I assume hold charge for some considerable length of time) why do you need a battery?

I am wondering if maybe that's what she's doing with her super capacitor. A capacitors speed of charge is determined by the RC time constant. Five time constants is a virtual charge and five time constants is a virtual discharge. MAYBE, she is charging with a particular Resistance value determining the charge time constant and using a different Resistance value ( the load) for a different discharge time constant making for a longer discharge time. This is kind of out there, but maybe it has something to do with it.

IF that is what she's doing, the power required by an IPhone is a TINY fraction of what would be required to operate an electric car. I'm skeptical that if it is anything like this that she came up with to operate an IPhone, could make the jump to the power levels required by an electric car.

A little googling is bringing forth what seems to indicate that the fanfare is deserved, but as far as actually powering any complex device appears premature.

To begin with, it seems that it only holds about a tenth of the energy per weight as any battery. Also, if what I read is correct, she has not yet powered a cell phone with it. She powered an LED.

I am not trivializing her invention, but in reality it does appear to be a bit raw at this point.

One other advantage uncovered is that it is good for about ten times as many recharges as a typical cell phone battery. There is definitely promise in her invention, but I don't think I would run out and buy a Tesla, with the idea that you will be running down the road under the power of this lovely young ladies invention any time soon.
