Question German members; do we have any?

Just curious, I don't recall seeing any posts here from Germany.

Cap'n Carageous,

I'm from Germany and live in Tennessee now, but I'm talking to people in Germany ( mostly Stuttgart area ) every day.
I work for a German company and most likely you have our product in your car. Our product even was in the formula 1 car that won the world championship, just to bad that it wasn't a Mercedes.
We manufacture pistons and you can find our pistons in almost every vehicle around the globe. We are also very active in the Motorsport business, a high number of formula one engines are equipped with MAHLE pistons and very soon you will find our product in the Nascar series.

I thought this might be of interest for some people on this forum.

A friend of mine is restoring an '83 UR Quattro and purchased MAHLE pistons for the engine rebuild. I saw them firsthand before they went in - very nice stuff indeed!

Regards,
- Ryan

I remember a German was on for a while about a year and a half ago. There are several German/Americans who have frequented the site.

Have a great day,

The main reason I ask this is that recently I met a native Nigerian. He is a very pleasant man and a good conversationalist. His accent was a treat to listen to and his English was very good. He was well traveled worldwide and when he discovered I had a Mercedes, he laughed loudly: "Only in America are these luxury car", he laughed! "Every where else they are TAXIES! Especially in GERMANY" . I just wanted a real German to clear that up.

I've never been to Germany Cap'n, but I've heard the same thing from more than a few people. The W123 and W124 diesels are epsecially prevalent as taxi's. And what better a car for that task? No other car could withstand European taxi service and have even a reasonably long service life

I know that for the longest time (and probably still today) you could get a 'stripper' model of a C or E-class (velour seats, power nothing, no AC, etc.).

Moreso than AMG bahn-burners, and S-class executive cars, Germans know MB's simply as quality machines that will run for a very long time and many buy them for this aspect alone.

Regards,
- Ryan

And for a little more taxi info:

I believe it's the 240D that is nicknamed "Beruit Taxi". Also, MB has data plate codes for those vehicles built specifically as taxis, right down to the approved taxi colors and interiors.

I'm Polish, but I lived in Germany for a while.

Most taxis in both Poland and Germany(and all Euro countries for that matter) are Mercedes. Mostly 124's in Poland, in Germany its more of the newer E-class, with the double round lights (dunno the chassis) plus a few 124's. Even when you go further east into the poor countries like Ukraine, the taxis are still Mercs, just 123's.

OK everybody,

Yes, most Taxis in Germany a Mercedes and the color of the vehicles are like a creamy white. The taxis are very clean and belong usually to a franchise group. You can find them on every airport or train station and people use them quit often, especially if someone has a bier or two. You don't want to get caught drunk driving in Europe.

I own a 307d motorhome in the UK and last night I was talking to a fellow who owns a grey market 207d campercan here in the US. He confirmed my suspicions. The reason that Mercedes did not import their extensive lines of trucks and vans into the USA was because they wanted to keep their image as a luxury car maker. That's probably also why they don't sell taxis in the USA. Image is everything to the marketing depts.
He did tell me that now, Freightliner is selling Mercedes Sprinter vans in the USA. Maybe Mercedes is giving up their luxury image.

Hello Cap'n Carageous,

Sorry to get back with you so late.

Yes it's the same MAHLE that makes the MAHLE or Knecht filters, just a different division.
