Someone is in Jail for Heroin. Now what?

I have this friend of a friend who got busted for heroin possession in NC. Mug shot attached. I think it is her first offense. Also, I don't think she had any intention to sell it if that matters at all (not smart enough-though you don't have to be smart either--the smart thing to do is to not do it at all but that's a different discussion).

So will someone familiar with how all this works tell me what the process is from this point on? how long will this go on? also, i imagine it to be expensive (she is broke).

I'm not really familiar with how this section of the legal system works.

I'm sorry Speed, but I can't let that one go by.

Wishing a painful death to someone for doing their job is pretty much over the line. I don't know what cop has wronged you in the past, but you need to do some soul searching regarding your problem with cops.

Like everything else in this world, you get what you pay for. She'll be assigned a legal aid attorney who will barely represent her interests and won't make any kind of decent argument for leniency. She's at the mercy of the court system............not a good thing under any circumstances.

If she had the funds for a decent attorney, her prospects improve dramatically. He frames the case for the prosecutor/judge to show her in the best possible light and, hopefully, gets a much reduced (maybe suspended???) sentence.

Air&Road: If they want people to give a crap about them and not wish them the worst, they should go find a real job, not one that's comprised of harassing the public. Oh yeah, and coming from the person who wants to fry drug users, this is pretty rich.

Illegal drug use seems to be quite common in the world of badges and guns...

Well Ben, at least she doesn't look to be in really bad physical condition. Is she strung out?

If she is a user, maybe jail is what she needs. One weekend when I was in the Army, I was the only NCO available to go transport a member of our unit that had gone AWOL and had been caught by the MP's. He had been pimping and was strung out on Heroin and someone from our unit had to transfer him from an MP station in Frankfurt to the Mannheim Stockade.

When we picked him up (while armed to the teeth by the way) I had to sign for him and the key to the handcuffs. The MP told me that NO MATTER WHAT, don't let him talk me into removing the handcuffs.

He was sick the whole trip and we stopped at least a half dozen times to let him throw up. It was the only time I've ever been around someone in that condition. Hopefully your friend is not nearly that bad.

Her getting caught could turn out to be a blessing in disguise for her, before she gets in much worse shape with it. Best of luck to her.

They are basically worthless and the judge will show no sympathy for such folks, unfortunately. She could get 5-10 years in jail without proper representation.

That's the most important thing to do at this point..............find an attorney and pay him.

You must be having trouble with your reading comprehension today. Go back and reread my posts. I propose frying the drug dealing kingpins, not the users.

Do you think that ALL cops are as you describe? Every, single one of them?

I don't know what 'strung out' means but I assume you mean big time addicted. I don't know that much detail but I do know that she is epileptic. Since she is epilectic, she can't get a driver's license.

So will the prison system take care of her medical needs? this might actually be a good thing for her.

Sad that our society treats a medical problem as a criminal one, to be solved with violence rather than treatment if/when it starts affecting her life.

i agree with your first statement for sure.

regarding the second statement--- mix broke and cute, add in some drugs, a little Red Roof Inn...let's just say she has a lot of 'uncles' she hangs out with.
