This is where house arrest with electronic monitoring is a good option. Also, can you still buy guns if a background check shows unresolved felony charges?

...18-year-old in Texas ...
Yet another example of why that state stinks so badly.

All states have their schweens in the police dept and prosecutor's office. Here's one example from my fair state:

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/14/nyregion/arrested-after-his-vulgar-response-to-traffic-ticket-man-files-suit.html

This isn't a Texas thing. This is an overreactive idiot thing.

First Rule: THERE IS ALWAYS ALWAYS MORE TO THE STORY.
Second Rule: See First Rule
Third Rule: See the following quote from the OP

"A woman in Canada was alarmed by Carter's questionable comment and notified authorities. Carter's home was then searched (although no weapons were found) and his computer was taken. The teen spent his 19th birthday in jail; this is the first time he's been incarcerated."

Ms Excitable felt that his statement on Facebook was a problem so she turned him in.

When paying a traffic fine, do not strike or write anything on the ticket. Traffic ticket fines are the price we all pay to drive on the roads. Next time he drives through Liberty, I predict he will be immediately pulled over and ticketed AGAIN. He is now a marked man. He will soon find out what the "hassle police" are all about.

Legitimate traffic fines are. Tailgating, 80 mph through a school zone, drunken driving. Things like that.

Fines for a speeding ticket where you have a 25 mph sign dropping from 50 mph limit around a sharp bend, and Ossifer Piggie Donut on the other side of the sign using a radar gun as a substitute for his missing ding-dong, not so much.

I've driven through Liberty on the freeway, but don't know the setup of local roads there. Lots of towns in rural NJ and NY are just as bad as the stereotypical speed trap in Mississippi. Who's to say what happened?

But if the judge had actually had some legal training, he'd have known that a mere act of rudeness toward someone isn't aggravated harassment. Might be disorderly conduct at most under NY law. Sadly, town judges in NY state aren't even required to have a law degree.

There are so many jerkwater towns whose main source of monies are traffic fines, it is impossible to list all of them. Your chances of receiving a ticket in jerkwater AKA "Hazard County" are greatly increased. Sometimes they will stop people for NO REASON AT ALL except just to "check them out". Apparently, there are web sites that list known speed traps.

You: But officer, I wasn't doing anything wrong.

Officer: By signing the ticket, you are not admitting to guilt. You can either pay the fine by mail or appear in court. Have a nice day.

Exactly. Which just proves my point that crazy and/or malicious prosecutions aren't limited to TX.

I read somewhere that people who live in small town America (under 25,000 population) are TWICE as likely to be wrongfully prosecuted as people who live in large Cities.

Jerkwater, not the place to live, visit or drive through........

Doesn't sound like much more of significance is there to be seen. A woman about 2000 miles away was frightened by some keystrokes on a computer and the guy has been in jail for a few months? For starters?

He was turned in by a foreigner no less. I certainly don't feel I have the right to call Canadian authorities and rat out someone living in Canada. I'm wondering what the legal implications are concerning a complaint made by a foreign Citizen? Are authorities required to respond to a foreigner's complaints? I mean, who is she to stick her nose into the business of the people of Texas?

What is your understanding of when background checks are utilized?

When guns are bought from a licensed dealer. House arrest till trial should reasonably preclude the other options of buying privately or from a gun show.

Strange stuff, the kid makes a sarcastic if ill advised remark on facebook and has been in jail for several months awaiting $500K bond (finally posted by a donor) with trial to begin shortly for making terroristic comments.
I think they released him. Will check for validity.
