Amazing: GM finally goes for 3 liter V8 in the Corvette

Yahoo!

Quote:
GM has approved the use of a very European-style V-8 that will be only slightly larger than 3 liters in displacement. The engine will be an overhead-cam, rather than traditional overhead-valve design, using a dry sump oil system that’s particularly well suited to high-performance road courses rather than straight-line acceleration. The engine is expected to feature a narrow 80.5 mm bore and a long stroke, more like a Ferrari or Lamborghini powertrain than the approach used for traditional Motor City metal.

A very senior GM executive also confirmed that the new engine will be turbocharged, which will help yield a broad torque curve and maximum performance under a variety of driving conditions. The engine is expected to deliver in excess of 400 horsepower, which means a specific output in the range of 125 horsepower per liter. That’s the sort of number that would help the next-generation Vette stack up well against the likes of a Porsche 911 or Lamborghini Gallardo.

Amazing, -well not really ( if they want to fit into the great black fathers future fuel standards-steps like this will be commonplace ahead). I thought I would have to re tera-ize a landfish 181 mercruiser 3.0 to stick with a self imposed 3 litre limit for projects.
Still it will be many yrs before salvage units become avalable for rod guys.

"the great black fathers future fuel standards"

Pardon me? The fact of increasing fuel scarcity is somehow Obama's doing? Please explain sir. WTF are you on about.

I think it's amazing because of the stubborn US love affair with 7 liter V8s and their much vaunted basso profundo exhaust note. I don't like the sound myself. I cut my teeth on my buddy's dad's XKE in the 60s (4.2 inline 6). One of my favorite exhaust notes was from a 1952 Ferrari 2.0 liter V12. Saw it at the Palo Alto auto concourse several years back and heard the owner start it up and drive away at the end. Very sweet.

7.0 liters in a car the size of a Corvette is lunacy IMO. Cobras likewise. A 3.0 to 3.5 BMW motor in a Cobra would be a screamer.

Dont read innuendo into my posts- finally there was some steps at sensability for the vettes future and YES it was the great black father that dragged the general-kicking and screaming into the future.

Well, yes, there is that. But that was because he's a socialist, wasn't it?

High-revving, long-stroke? I thought a long stroke precludes high revs due to increased piston speeds.

BTW- if you read the article, there will be several engine choices including larger OHV motors. This will be just one option. Stop knee-jerking and freaking out, people.

I wondered about the long stroke aspect too. I'll be interested to see more articles about this engine. I saw a new vette the other day on the highway and it looked pretty cool, very low, very compact and very dart like.

Cool! Nice chevy has decided to join the 20th century. (Though I must admit I admired their tenacity with the pushrod engine for so long!)

I meant to say 20th since many cars had overhead cams in the fifties.

The vettes I've sat in have no room in the cabin. Way too small.

Time for a mid-engined Corvette. The smaller V8 would make powertrain packaging a relatively easy task.

It's about time they move their V8's into the 21st century. I was amazed when GM spent a ton on their new generation V8 and made it OHV.
