And how many Mercedes have you bought new? What model will be your next purchase?

Wasn't the same thing said about the 80's 190 W201 ?

The 190E was built without compromise when it came to engineering. Can you say the same for the CLA? Front wheel drive? Hood that needs a prop rod to stay open? Cheap interior? I can dig the take it or leave it styling though.

My friend is a tech at the Mercedes dealer. He and his colleagues at the shop agree this car has the makings to be a major **** box. Consumer reports lists the CLA as the most unreliable luxury car on the road.

From Consumer reports:

Consumer Reports ratings show the CLA suffers from a raft of problems, ranging from engine and audio issues to glitches with the things like the power windows.

CR also reports numerous squeaks and rattles, which the publication defines as "body integrity" issues.

For the Stuttgart-based automaker, the CLA has sold and leased well in the U.S. due to its low (for a Mercedes) price point — around $35,000, for a well-equipped model.

However, Consumer Reports has not been impressed by the overall execution of the product. "The CLA is not a great vehicle," Linkov said.

"It's small, cramped, and with a front-wheel drive chassis is also missing some Mercedes-Benz DNA."

My R107 and W126 have zero interior squeaks and rattles and they are over 30 years old.

No Mercedes should be comparable to a Corolla or Civic. They are sacrificing their brand identity for the sake of sales. BMW has manages to build a cheap car with out compromising their standards. Why can't Mercedes?

Just to be clear, we here on Peach Parts are not 'the people'.
I realize that Mercedes cannot compete by building 240Ds anymore. And FWD was probably inevitable. And I could even live with one that looks like a Corolla.
But the real problem is cars that require "a degree from MIT to reset the oil change light", and keys that "cost $500 to replace", coupled with the mediocre reliability that I've read about, and friends have actually experienced with some Mercedes built in the last two decades!

Consumer reports has "favorites" and very few Mercedes owners in their ranks. In nearly all other rating reports Mercedes does much better than CR.

As for the costs of certain bits of Merecdes new cars . . . That's bee the case for about 20 years, check fob prices when they switched from keys.

I hear similar gripes when Consumer Reports knocks some American car.
Actually, Consumer Reports just top rated a Mercedes in their recent issue.

Yes, you can tell how overjoyed they were.

For many car buyers who desire a well-balanced mix of driving excitement, luxury appointments, and brand status, the pinnacle has been the BMW 3 Series. Other manufacturers have tried, but none has been able to replicate BMW’s magic in creating the best sporty compact luxury sedan. Until now.

In our Ratings, the redesigned Mercedes-Benz C300 toppled the BMW 328i from the top spot among mainstream entries—although the low-selling BMW 328d diesel still remains our best scorer. Plus: A new Acura takes its shot at the segment leaders.
