What do people define as haggling? I name a price, you counteroffer and I make a counteroffer to your counteroffer or walk. Is that really haggling? To me haggling means I ask $100 knowing it is worth $50, you offer $10 and we go on till we get to somewhere in the middle. The former is not too bad but the latter is a big waste of my time.

To me any discussion of the price before a purchase is haggling.....a fine and ancient skill. ...practiced in most cultures but developed to a fine art in the middle east and far east.

I like the haggle on almost everything. What gets me are the mouthbreathing lowballers on Craigslist. Post a car and ask 2K.
Phone rings "you take a thousand for it?"
" you haven't seen it or driven it"
"uh huh, you take a grand for it anyhow?"
"didn't your daddy teach you how to dicker? Come see it and make me an offer. Money talks"
"'K, bye"
they never come and look. Do people actually say yes to them often enough to make it worth while to make blind, lowball offers?
This is what floors me. You can't reasonably offer something of known value (ie cash) for something of unknown value (ie very used car). As the seller, I won't stand for it.

I've done it when the deal was sufficiently good. Actually offered almost full price, paypal'ed a deposit, conditionally on the vehicle being what the seller said it was (and it was).

I got a russian guy wants my property and he has the attitude that everything he has is golden and anything he wants is bargain basement crap.

His argument would hold a little more sway if he hadn't already bought the lot next door. I know exactly what he paid.

Well tell him he's got to pay tourist tax if he wants your property - that will help.

I like that. When he makes the next offer I'll tell him it is not out of the question if he is paying that plus the tourist tax.

What kind of offer is that? Tell me again, where did you say you are from?

Then there are those who walk into my shop and want to haggle after I hand them their invoice. Usually they start with offering cash as some sort of incentive for me to lower the price. Odds are I've already discounted some hours off the job and I'm not ready to loose any more.

Sure, I could take his cash. After I cover all of the parts, labor and materials I'd still have to add taxes to a phoney invoice. So, not only would I be taking less, I'd be paying his tax on the job.

Used parts are a bit different though. Had two guys from Toronto ( not home fries ) come to my place looking for 220S parts. If I said 100 bucks they offered 10 bucks or less. I had some really clean 220S bumpers, front and rear, complete with guards and brackets - I said 500 each as a start and he said 100 bucks for everything.
Then he said I owed him money or parts from some deal 7 years ago. Nothing like bringing in deals that have nothing to with the deal you're currently on. In the end he stuck 100 bucks in my hand, ran to his car with one bumper and drove away. Two days later he wanted to get more stuff from me - I passed. He kept calling back but that was it.
