That said, while I am prepared to kill you, I wouldn't shoot unless I had to. Did she make any sudden moves or threaten him? IDK. I'd wait for the trial to see what happens.
Come with a loaded weapon? Fine. Open the door with the weapon aimed and your finger on the trigger? Not OK.

Or better yet, how about this. Not get so blind stinking drunk and high and be the girl your family said you were and smart about it? Get a designated driver or get a cab home or whatever.

I'm not wholly certain what happened there. However, at 1800, you could be right but someone banging on the door at 0230 waking you out of bed like the Gestapo usually did, it does create a state of panic, which was their intention. Factor in the area and the recent history of blighted neighborhoods and I can understand why the guy didn't want to take any chances.

Bad deal for all concerned but I find it hard to feel any pity for the girl.

The part that bothers me is that this was not a close range encounter so I don't know what happened. Was she charging towards him and he panicked or did she walk away and he shot her in the back of the head. Since she was shot in the face, I kinda wonder what happened. Did she charge or do something to startle and/or panic him whereby she fired a shot or was she standing there and he just plucked her off?

I've had drunk neighbors who had just moved in bang on my door after midnight to invite me to a party and ask if I had any beer left (true story). I didn't shoot at them or even call the cops.

It seems folks are forgetting the victim was a child - 19yo for heavens sake. How many stupid things have you done when you were a teenager?

That she was drunk and had THC in her system is still no reason for her to be gunned down by this guy. Only after much pressure from the community is the PD even seeking charges against the guy.

I'm pretty sure the legal age of adulthood in Michigan (and 49 other states) is 18.

I like how 17-19 year olds can be children when it suits others' purposes and adults when we want to nail them to the wall.

At what age do people become adults?

Depends on the person. Some never do, some are adults at age 14. Anyway, unless she was threatening his life, he had NO RIGHT to gun her down or for that matter answer the door with a gun aimed at her and ready to fire. He may or may not beat the murder rap, but I hope that his family, friends, and neighbors see the mark of Cain on him for life.

In 2001 or so, I still didn't have a cell phone and I was driving home for Thanksgiving from college through rural NJ south of Flemington. Skidded out on something in the road, ended up stuck in a farmer's field at 1 am. I knocked on his door, and he ended up helping me get the car unstuck by hauling it out with his truck. No major damage other than to my pride.

Should he have come to the door with an itchy finger on the trigger of a shotgun because he could in America?

FYI

Ignoring the hysterical ranting...

There has been ongoing investigation.

Today arrest and charges.

There is IMO not enough public data for any informed decision.

The area is bad, forced entry break in and murder are common.

For a male the brain is not fully developed until he reaches approximately 28, for a women it is earlier.

Anyone who has a shotgun at the ready is not going to leave their door unlocked overnight. He should have called the cops and waited. If she broke in, especially with help, go for the 12 gauge solution, but one drunk teenager, if technically an adult, on the porch ought not to be grounds for deadly force. The guy is screwed.

I agree it should be a cautionary tale for people thinking about knocking on someone's door at 2:30 am.
