The same thing happened back in my home town in the 60's. A 707 landed at the local airport where the max runway length is a little over 5000 feet.

The specs on the plane state a typical landing run of 6000' so I reckon' they had everything hung out to get it stopped. I remember my father telling me that all of the seats had to be removed to lighten the plane enough to make a safe takeoff.

Interestingly, the runway length at Santa-Ana, CA is about 5000 ft -- they regularly fly loaded MD-80s and 737s out of there. Takeoff is interesting ... hold at the beginning of the runway, run up engines to some high level of power, let go of brakes, accelerate, zoom up to a few thousand feet, cut power to a lower level.

They also have to reduce weight (either by bumping passengers or by reducing fuel load and stopping over at Ontario) if the temperature is above a certain level.

I'm thinking that jet engine technology is much better now than back then. At that time, it's likely that the 707 wasn't even running turbofans.

That's a factually incorrect statement.

The runway length ALWAYS dictates less than maximum loads on all MD-80's and 737's.

No commercial aircraft can fly to it's maximum range out of John Wayne.
