I might see about getting a carbine and m1903 to add to the collection.

Collect them all! I'm fond of the Grease Gun as well as the BAR which is a beast!

I have shot one once, made me feel tingly all over!

Good advice that applies to guns, trucks/cars, and women...

What do you mean by a K98 clone?

Maybe he is talking about the Zastava M48. It looks like the K98, but the action parts aren't interchangeable.

They're variations of the original Mauser action. The K98 was perhaps the most famous.

Watch your fingers when reloading! They were dubbed the 'thumb-breakers' for a reason!

Ah I see. Actually I have quite a few. K98's, M98/22's and M24/47's. The only one I don't have from that group is an M48. Pity. The stars have never aligned for me on one. Actually only the M48 could be considered somewhat of a K98 clone as it's the only one the came after it. The other Yugo mauser, the M24/47 were reworks of the FN model 1924 which predated the K98 by about 11 years.

I won the last military surpluss shoot we had at our local range with my 1943 Russian Capture K98. I'm going to try one of my Enfield No 4 Mk1's at the next match and see if it's all it's made out to be. Also a 1943 dated one made by Savage in the US. I have my doubts about it though. Just doesn't "feel right" to me the way a Mauser does. Hopefully with some practice I'll be able to do ok with it.

Regarding the original post. The Garand is a great rifle but it's meaningless to compare any semi-auto with a bolt gun in a compettitive setting. The need to break and re-acquire your sight picture whenever your cycle the bolt puts such rifles in a different class than a Garand.

There are three US rifles I'd really like to acquire. The Garand is one, a 03 Springfield is another. But the one I'd really like to pick up is a Model of 1917. There is one in Cabelas right now made by Eddystone that looks to be in decent shape but at almost 1800 bucks I'm afraid it'll remain a dream for me.

I'm hoping to pay that for a car this weekend...

- Peter.
