I'd imagine that "doing her job" would involve either saying "I'll take your number and call you when I'm done showing the property" or handing him her card and asking him to call her later. It appears that she was NOT doing her job, or rather doing it in a pretty tactless manner. Slapping a potential client in the face has consequences, and she should learn that sooner rather than later.

Was he any better? I thought you said "niceness gets niceness"? Maybe he should have been nice and made an appointment instead of just barging in and expecting them to welcome him? I would so love to see you put everything aside when you are deep in a project and I come barging in your office. Do you even expect anyone to believe you will be nice about it? I don't.

I wouldn't bother reporting her as a racist (if that's even what she was). But, if she was the listing agent, nothing wrong with letting her know that she blew the deal for herself by pushing a client away.

Don't know if she was. Without more information, it is hard to say. Not wanting to work with a black guy she thinks is offensive or just plain rude isn't racism. Not wanting to work with any black guy is.

Assuming that he was able and willing to pull the trigger and is the only deal around, perhaps. Would I lose any sleep over it? Probably not. I wouldn't think the few extra dollars in commission would make the difference between what she has now and possibly having the other buyer wonder if a shill game was in operation and possibly having her reputation in question. Business isn't just about the sale here. It is about future sales.

I think SRJ has his mind pretty well made up, and none of us will change that. he may be right; he may be over-reacting; AFAIK, there is too little objective information. It would be interesting to hear from the realtor, as to what she saw/ perceived.

He wasn't being a jerk. People drive or walk by properties they're interested in all of the time. If they happen to see the broker there (ads often have pictures of the listing broker), it wouldn't be all that unusual to try to talk to the broker.

The broker has no idea if ANYONE -- including the people she's showing the property to -- is able and willing to pay. Deals fall through due to "buyer non-performance" all the time. Bank statements can be easily Photoshopped.

I could easily see some inexperienced broker who grew up in a small town making the mistake of thinking that a black guy is there for no good, and can't possibly have the money to buy a property. I've heard an apocryphal story from a Porsche dealership in the L.A. area. The people who showed up in sweats, disheveled on a weekday morning asking for a test drive were often film industry or sports notables, and able to pay cash the same day if they liked the car. Newbie salespeople who made the mistake of blowing off those customers didn't last very long.

Kinda. IF I am in the middle of something and you come running in, why wouldn't I think that? As I said, if you are in the middle of something like that with people and I come barging in asking you for things, what would you think?

Correct. I don't know if you can afford it or not but I do know that I am in the middle of something with someone else and you are being rude. If I walked into your office when you are trying to demo something, I wouldn't blame you for tossing me out on my ear or at least asking me to leave and never return.

Before I make that judgment, I'd really like to see more evidence of discrimination, be it racial or another form. Can it exist? Absolutely. Can I blow someone off simply because they come in wearing rags? Sure. However, not having the courtesy of waiting till I am done with my appointment makes me think he/she was discriminating on the basis of the OP not having the common courtesy of waiting till he/she was done. As YOU said, niceness begets niceness. Now if he had waited till the other party was done and out and asked the lady, there could be something said about being polite and rebuffed.

I agree. Plenty of racism cases exist only in the mind of the oppressed minority. They have a good chance of winning due to the overly critical mindset of PC of potential juries.
