Or possibly lose both client and the walk up.

I agree with what others have said: you tried to jump in on a private showing. She told you to get lost. As for "I don't feel comfortable showing you the house" that means "get lost you're not my client". You also were breaking their usual scheduling protocols which may be there for safety reasons on top of everything else.

So you are saying that "I didn't get my way" and I happen to be a minority does not equal racism? So I cannot say the cop that didn't let me off the hook who said "I cannot give you only a warning ticket." isn't a racist? That means I have to pay the fine? What a crock of poop.

What strange wording. "...I cannot say the cop...isn't a racist?" Your point is lost, at least on me.

I agree. Plenty of racism cases exist only in the mind of the oppressed minority. They have a good chance of winning due to the overly critical mindset of PC of potential juries.

Jimmy Stewart, the Actor, was once turned away from the The Ritz Hotel in Paris. Why? Because the Hotel had a strict policy of not renting rooms to anyone in show business.

So Stewart left, turned around, went back in requested a room for Gen. Jimmy Stewart, USAF.

The General got the room.

So maybe you weren't presenting yourself correctly.

If the realtor was a buyer's agent they would need you to contract with them before they would waste their time showing you anything.

Nope. I had a buyer's agent whom I hired without signing an exclusive. A contract (at least a written one) isn't required.

I rarely, if ever post in OD, but having been a real estate agent in a previous life, I thought I'd jump in...

Sorry Joe, you put that agent in a precarious situation just from a security standpoint. He or she:

- was the responsible party in opening up a privately owned property
- didn't know you from Adam
- would not/could not keep tabs on the whereabouts in the property of all the parties had he/she let you in

As noted by others above, property viewings are by appointment (except during an Open House). You were crashing the party, so to speak, on a scheduled business meeting of others.

I suspect you caused some alarm in the showing agent and that agent reacted clumsily because of that consternation (fear).

Had it been me, I would have done the same (refused your immediate entry) although I would have asked you to contact me for your own showing and given you my card (a prospect is a prospect).

In a nutshell, you barged in on a private business activity in a manner that caused security concerns at the least if not outright disbelief and incredulity over your actions in so doing. The proper thing for you to do would have been to call for a showing appointment of your own or at worst, briefly interrupt their private business to ask that showing agent for his/her card and express interest in the property for a later showing (still a boorish action - the first option is the correct way to have conducted yourself).

Regards to all,
Kevin

I also keep thinking of the "Seinfeld" episode focusing on nuance.

What did the person emphasize?

Did he say, "I'm not comfortable showing you the property?"

Or was it, "I'm not comfortable showing you the property?"

Or perhaps, "I'm not comfortable showing you the property?"

If the second, I can see how one might hear racism. Otherwise, I think it's a fair chance it was just a poorly-chosen phrase under the circumstances.
You got the quote correctly.

That is an uncomfortable situ....
I can't confirm any theory at this time. I'm only certain of what I witnessed and heard said by the other shoppers and the agent in this instance.

I have consulted counsel and have been referred to another firm, as well as considering some other options I hadn't considered.

I don't think the agent was aware of anything positive for anyone at the time the quoted phrase was blurted out after laying eyes on me.

Perhaps. The agent created an untenable situation out of the blue. Very unfortunate to have put the other shoppers as well as myself through - they dispersed the property very soon after the agent basically shut the door on me.

Totally off-base, RE: security. Again, for the benefit of anyone not there, this (security) was not a concern to any party - including myself. I'm about as disarming an individual as one could find in a first meeting, public or business place. -Of which this was a commercial enterprise location that I was at.
Thanks.....

If you're that worried about security, perhaps you shouldn't be a broker or should consider carrying a pistol. Keep in mind that Google Voice and throwaway cell phones are ubiquitous right now -- any crazy can make an appointment to see a property over the phone.

I wouldn't throw caution to the wind either.

How did they do that? By making you show up and possibly looking like a shill?

Much like Jeffrey Dahlmer?
