Do we have any members here running in the Gumball 3000?
Its right around the corner, at the end of April. Anyone in here going to run in the Gumball 3000 from NYC to LA? Looks lame in comparison to the London to Russia and back runs but I still want to do it!!!!

I'm not doing it, but my younger brother is. He just bought a BMW 850 to drive in it.

Any news on who won this year?
I'm seeing Gumball cars in Los Angeles, why just today I saw a Gumball Silver 2002 SL and last night saw a Red Ferrari Modena in Hollywood. Sorry no pictures.

I went and had breakfast with my brother at the Crescent Court hotel on Sunday morning, where all the gumballers (gumballees?) spent the night. The hundred or so cars were arrayed around the courtyard of the hotel. Some pretty impressive machinery was present. There were a few Benzs present, but nothing too interesting. A brand new 2003 SL500, a w140 S500, and a brand new G500. Didn't notice any AMG cars at all.
By far the most popular marquee was Ferrari - there must have been 30 or 40 of them. Most were recent models - the F355 was quite popular. There was an older Testarossa or two, and one or two older V12 coupes from the late 60s/early 70s. Quite a few Audis in attendance, particularly S4 sedans. BMW was well represented with a few M3s, and of course my brother's 850i. There was one new Mini, one Morgan, a TVR, and a token Lamborghini. The "rally" - it really isn't one - doesn't sound like anything I'd want to do. It's a ton of driving, no route planning, no competition, no support. For the substantial entry fee, all you really got was a couple nice hotel rooms, and a couple dinner parties. I think it cost about 10 grand to enter; though I can't imagine why. Mostly the event seemed to be an opportunity for the Europeans to bring over some hot cars and drive the tar out of them on public highways. Any tickets received here don't affect their Euro drivers licenses or insurance rates. Many of the cars were being driven accordingly... |
