Subaru Class Action Suit: Excessive Oil Consumption

Subaru Faces Class-Action Suit for Oil Consumption - Motor Trend WOT

The suit claims Subaru released four technical bulletins during September and December of 2013, which outlined that the affected models were “experiencing abnormally high levels of engine oil consumption that warranted an intricate repair process to properly remedy," and identified "unanticipated wear of the oil control piston rings as the root cause of the oil consumption defect."

Hmm...wonder if this is related to the infamous ringland issue

Wow, so they allegedly denied warranty coverage for an $8000 repai and then issued TSBs about it? That's not good.

That surprised me, too. I guess they thought it wouldn't come to light?

That's it? Most cars I've had needed a quart every few tanks of fuel. My Sammy needed a quart every 200 miles. My 300D is the best on oil of any vehicle I've had. By the time it gets down to the add mark, it's due for a change. Hell, my Kawi goes through a quart in about 3000 miles, and it only holds 2.5.

We recently did a 1,100 mile trip to AZ and back, and the Subaru consumed maybe 1 quart of oil. Sure it's not that bad, but for a brand new car, and considering I had to send the car in for service due to oil leaks (timing chain cover), I'm interested how this plays out.

My concern isn't the immediate condition of the vehicle, but the long term effects if not addressed soon, especially because we plan to keep the Subaru.

Honestly I'm not sure where that reputation comes from. They're very agricultural cars (terrible interiors for a while), lots of head gasket issues in the past, some weak transmissions, ring land issues, now this (different than ring land I guess?). Ring land issues are actually what dissuaded me from buying a wrx and I went with the GTI.

I drove my truck with 6.2 L HMMWV engine for 5250 miles (California and back) and it only used 1/2 a quart. It used more water crossing the Mojave pulling a car-loaded-on-trailer. In fairness it also used two quarts of anti-freeze. Went about 65 the whole trip.

Wow, for a modern engine, that seems high.

Subaru has offered to replace the piston rings on a case by case basis monitored by the VIN of the vehicle where there has been proven excessive oil consumption.
