Modified punchline to a semi-classic joke:

Two retired men meet on Miami Beach and they soon begin to discuss their lives and how they came to be there.

The first man says, "I use to run a successful business in New York. One day unfortunately there was a huge fire and my entire warehouse burned to the ground. I collected the insurance on it and decided to move here."

The second man says, "Similar story here. I used to run a business in Jacksonville but unfortunately the entire thing was ruined by a hurricane. I collected my insurance and moved to Miami."

The first guy pauses for a minute and asks "How do you start a hurricane?"

That was a quick ownership.

The velour seats should make it somewhat comfy if you end up having to sleep in it.

That damn SDL has been a nightmare from about 2 weeks in. I had to put a transmission in it, take care of several leaks along with other issues. Never get to hop in and drive because something new always breaks.

The original plan was to close December 31, but I'm down to only 2 cars. I've been catching up on Netflix for last week, and have taken a few short trips to visit friends. Also taking alot of time to play with my toddler.

I hope I remember how to work come January.

The hail storm paid out well. Made it easy to sell off the inventory as the damage was light to unnoticeable. Still going to have to bring in a little cash to square everything off come year end, but could be alot worse.

My landlord was quick to let me out of my lease. Turns out they were under contract to sell the property to the large dealership next door who will expand to my lot. They even allowed my final rent check to be the deposit. The building is getting bulldozed.

I bet you are psyched at this point.

When i closed down my first business i went through several stages of grief, but within a few weeks i was extremely happy because it was the correct move and i was ready to move on.

Well done shutting it all down before it shuts you down.

Theres a lot of life ahead, lots of new opportunites. Lots of small business people make the mistake hanging on way too long and sinking their entire being into something when its not the right move.

Ill bet you within 5 years you will be working for yourself again in some radically different field. Once you get the taste, its hard to dislike being your own boss

1 car left. It will sell if I can ever get it fixed properly. 2004 Jetta with 92,000 miles for $4995.

My friend Bob owns the big European Salvage yard here in town and has his license to flip cars on the side. I send him alot of junk cars and fixers through my connections. He is going to let me buy and sell under his license should I do anything on the side in the future. We made the rounds of my normal wholesale sources (what few I have left) and made introductions.

One was the local Hyundai dealer, where I bid their trade ins. They get alot of junkers that I have bid on for Bob. We left bids on the vehicles, and got totally blown away. It is a closed bid sale. Leave your best number, and whoever is highest wins. We are bidding against a few other small dealers and big wholesalers. This is not a public sale.

2002 Hyundai Accent: Beat to hell and locked up motor. 217,000 miles:
....sale price $358.

2003 Saturn Ion: CVT transmission was acting strange 147,000 miles. Ok shape
...$2460...

2002 Toyota Avalon 160,000 miles. Bad suspension noise. some scrapes.
....$3866.

2002 Kia Spectra. Knocking motor 230,000 miles horrible shape.
....$433.

1997 Grand Prix Coupe. 130,000 miles. Dash lit up like a X-mas tree. Beat up, catalytic converter missing, the rest held up by tape.
...$1616

2001 Dodge Caravan: Rusted out, 150,000 miles with knocking motor.
...$415

2003 Acura MDX with 109k. Really clean but Transfer case roars.
....$7270

2002 Honda CRV with 177k. Bad Axle half shafts, heavy hail damage, 3 check engine codes, very dirty.
...$4136

2004 VW Beetle. 75k miles. Destroyed rim (sitting on spare) and scraped down passenger side. Check engine with several codes.
...$4897

This should be the slow time of year, just before people start stocking up for tax return season. If I paid those prices, I would lose on every single one.

Sounds like you are able to get out pretty painlessly. Good for you. I hope the new job works out.
The last couple of years your unhappiness with your customers was very evident so this should be a good change for you.

As JB3 said though its hard working for someone else after being your own boss.

I'd pretty sure that working for someone else would make me want to slam a crowbar into their face, repeatedly.

Yessh, why would anyone even want those? Even BHPH places have initial investment and have to sell a car at the end of the day. Only one out of those that sounds like it might work out is the acura, and thats still a good chunk of change for it.
