Ha!
First call I got about the 450SL was from the buyers daughter in Germany. I basically told her that the car was most likely not worth it if her plan was to ship it to Germany. Then the buyer here in FL called and wanted to talk price and I listened for a minute and told him I don't talk price on the phone- he's got to see the car. He sent his son- who spoke German to him on the phone and gave me an offer which was $700 less than asking and I turned him down- I had other buyers coming to look. Dad texted me and gave the same offer. I said no again. A bit later he texts and offer a hundred more. No. He finally offers $300 less than asking- about an hour later. I take it and tell him this is a deal so don't back out. I tell the other buyers that the car is sold. The son returns two days later and delivers the cash as planned- so it worked out. Now the Dad is coming by to see my other SL items...

I am not rich, but damned secure in retirement, the lifetime pension and medical dental and vision care benefits don't hurt my feelings too much either. And the vacations and holidays were REAL generous too.

Might not hurt for Tyler to check going in that direction too. With a wife and family it might be a workable strategy for the LONG term.
Jim,
Personal friend since middle school retired from the U.S. Treasury as a bank examiner after 36 years. He also acquired his MBA & J.D. in night school early on in his Gov't. career. 28 years ago, he was earning $60K a year w/U.S. Treasury. Imagine what his retirement is today? I think he made the RIGHT choice staying put. (He does too.)

Sidenote: His younger Brother earned $2.5Mil total compensation in a recent year - he works for the Feds too in the banking system, and is also a J.D.

Yes, slow and steady can and does pay!

My goal this month is to clean out my inventory as much as possible. This includes personal cars.
Will you have an inventory and pricelist for these to post on PP?

For you cheapskates?

The real reason for the change is this good opportunity. As things get more solid I will elaborate.

Got it!

IF the sale includes the 500SL, formerly your Granny's, I'd like to see the bidding!

As a sometime buyer of used cars, I have to ask, what benefit is it to me as a buyer to buy from a used car dealer (generally at a higher price) than to buy from a private seller (usually at a lower price, often from someone who just wants the sales article gone)?

In order to get people on the lot, I usually sell at private party asking prices, and the cars have been fully inspected, repaired, detailed like a normal retail shop.

The guy got some creampuff older vehicles, and always took care of his customers. I bought my 83 300SD from a guy similar to Tyler but his was a note lot too. Randy was a great guy for me to deal with because he was honest. His mechanic Mehi took care of the things I couldn't on the car - all for $35.00 an hour labor. That was part of the deal/offering in that he would take care of the car with his on-site mechanic from then on. I wish TF I had another 'Randy' to buy used cars from, but he went out of business. He couldn't make it after probably 10-years or so, even though he owned the 1/2 acre or so of land. He then went to work as the used car appraiser for Mercedes-Benz of Chicago, right downtown on the Loop. He and Candy kept their home in Dallas, and I heard from a neighbor that he's back and not working for MB in Chicago anymore. No, when you get a guy like Tyler or Randy, you've got a good thing going when they'll work on your car on the cheap when you buy from them.

Several ppl on PP have bought cars from Tyler - they all went down as advertised, regardless - from what I've read here.

I just want an inventory, to see if anything interests me - is all I want right now.

Test drive on a 2007 328i with 75,000 miles

Customer drives it for an hour, returns stating they had taken it to their mechanic and it had serious problems.

1: Auxillary cooling fan is too loud. Needs to be replaced. Quoted $900.
2: Transmission lurches on hard take-off. Module or possible transmission issue.

They give me a ridiculous offer.

I turn on every BMW on the lot for them to show how beefy the cooling fans are on BMWs. Every one is that loud.

Showed them the transmission "sport" mode that will give them 1st gear start every time, rather than kick down from 2nd to 1st when they accelerate hard.

Story changes to "that's all the money we have." to justify their thousands below wholesale offer. Goodbye.

I guess we are going to see what you are made out of young man. Are you going to run away with your tail between your legs like a sissy or stand up like a MAN and FIGHT for your BUSINESS. There was a time that I had to almost give my print away to greedy printing brokers just to keep my family fed. It paid the bills. You might have to do some things you don't want to do to keep your business running. It's up to YOU young man. All of us here can give you all of the advice in the world but in the end, You are going to have to decide what you are going to do.

question, what are the things about auto sales that you enjoy?
right now sounds like lots of example of why you dislike it, what got you into it in the first place?

sounds now like you are just waiting till the end of the lease, like there is nothing you enjoy about it any more

I looks like to me that it was always fairly easy, finding good cars to sell wasn't a problem, now he is going to have to pound the pavement and find these cars. I other words, he is going to have to WORK HARD to find these cars. There are cars to be found out there.

I don't want to step in and answer for Tyler, but for me personally I've always had a thrill of buyng and driving something new and different. When you're in sales you can do that pretty easily, so long as you don't want to keep them all. I've seriously considered going that route but the PITA of selling cars always turns me away. I really admire that Tyler (who is the same age as me, roughly) made that choice, took the plunge to hang out his own shingle.

Would you stay and fight when a non-sale great paying job is dropped in your lap that gives your nights and weekends back?
