MY TPS wasn't working right on my 93. (It sends a signal to the transmission control module). I discovered that the problem was a poor connection at the 'off' position. It always sits in that position and the connection deteriorates over time. I simply turned the adjustment on the TPS so the 'off' position was slightly different and it now works fine. This is a common problem on the 93 GM diesel truck TPS. Not sure about 89 gas models.
I've got a matco proscan (otc) that does everything I could ever need in obd1. I regularly use it to adjust the tps on 80s electronic carbs.

I guess my van is a good bit less cherry than the one I posted back a ways. Oh well. It's a good truck.

Check out the color on this Chevy van:

I might copy that to some large degree ...

I put in a new radiator and various other upgrades a while back. Replace the auto tranny filter, new fluid, etc. It runs great now.

Not enough psychedelica.

I like this one. It hints at pyschedelica but you won't look like you're selling mushrooms out the back.

My 89 chevy the service light turned out to be the egr valve was plugged, but that was a 4.3 throttle body injection. You probably have a similar setup
Originally the trouble codes indicated O2 sensor and TPS (throttle position sensor). I replaced both of those with some apparent improvement. My original issue was stalling at idle while in gear.

I recently got the check engine light again and pulled a code for EGR circuit. The stalling is back and further I need to pass smog soon. So I replaced the valve (the old one looked pretty bad) and put in new plugs as well as fuel and air filters.

I disconnected the battery to clear the stored code, drove it a bit - no new check engine light action, no new codes stored. The stalling problem is still present though seems to be improved but perhaps it gets worse the hotter it gets, not sure. It runs pretty strong, I'd like to get past this. Maybe raising idle speed would be a cheap fix.

Whoa ... that one would get your attention all right. I'm not big the green/turquoise stuff in general. Plus THAT was an expensive paint job, all those stripes. The one I posted would be spendy enough.
