The only thing I don't like about it is the accessory hose retracts on its own when you're using it and it pulls the vacuum across the floor toward you due to the high suction.
Ours is at least 5 years old and still works as well as the day we bought it.

A friend was doing some home improvement and needed help with cleaning after a remodel. He used his Kirby to vacuum some carpet in an adjoining room, which I went back over with the Dyson.

The SOB actually was able to pull more dirt out of the carpet. After he saw that, he became a believer and picked up one of the Dyson ball thingys.

I'll be the first to admit that they are very plasticy, and definitely feel cheap! But after using one, I'm a believer.

I can tell you it is very possible to clog. Mom had a husky and a chow. Both log haired dogs that shed like an explosion. She was good about not letting it get too full. Dad had to regularly open it up and remove hair from the tubes above the canister. I'll never forget showing up at their house and seeing the dyson in the yard.

I have tried and tried to convince the wife into a kirby. Lots of them on craigslist for $200 or less. She just doesn't want to deal with the bags. I found an electrolux I kind of like. I am contemplating buying all of the parts to repair the current hoover pet rewind. It has been a good vacuum, But it has a "lifetime belt" that is defiantly worn out, ( they do sell a replacement) and the beater bar needs to be replace due to pet hair being wound into the bearings. All in all under $50.

Another vote for Dyson. Two dogs, one an Australian Shepard, and a long haired woman, and Dyson gets it done. Maybe your parents one had some sort of defect?

Get the one that is easy to clean and when you can't get it clean enough anymore it is time to throw it away and get another. Get one that is cheap enough to throw away anytime that you feel like it.

Carpet and animals are a bad mix. I like animals better than I like carpet but keeping animals in the house is silliness anyway you look at it. Especially cats - cats are nasty little animals.

For me, nothing beats an old Electrolux.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Rainbow (sp?). Expensive but no bags, no filters of any kind. We have had one for probably 20 years and have had NO problems. It uses water as the filter agent. Exactly how it works, I don't know, but it works well.
If you look up the price of one, be sitting down. That said, if something went wrong with ours we would buy another without question.

Look for local online estate auctions. I have a Rex-aire Rainbow and several Electrolus' that I picked up cheap. Parts are readily available for the Luxes. I have a Lux on the first floor and another one on the second floor since I am too lazy to haul one up and down the steps. Mom had a lux fro over 40 years. it outlived her.
