I am in search of a good house hold vacuum. We have to vacuum a lot due to dirt and pet hair. The pet hair seems to be what kills them. We are constantly destroying the beater bars.

That said, any recommendations?

No Dyson please. I will not own that junk. Kirby still uses bags, so that leaves them out.

Since it is all about price point today. The wife just buys various units as they wear out.

Maybe someone is still making good quality at a reasonable price but I do not know who it would be.

Actually I noticed her most recent cheap bissell is really good with pet hair and our dog does shed a lot even with brushing regularily. If it lasts a year it amortizes at 4.00 per month. If longer is better of course and depending on usage it very well might.

Very easy and much lighter for the wife to move around as well. still I would not call it an electric broom. Reasonable size pick up container and power brush width. Needless to say most vacuum cleaners like these are coming out of China today or the parts are.

The paremeters of design will enter into the situation if you are talking a lot of dirt though of course. My guess is in design the cheapies are far from commercial units. The wife has more powerful older units theoretically of higher quality but by and large they just sit because they are far more inconvienient to use.

12 cats, two dogs, and two long haired hippie types who deal with horses daily. We know about hair and dirt!

Dyson (I know you said not to, but it's working for us) cordless stick gets run every other day or so. Except in High Shedding Season, then it's at least once daily, sometimes twice.

Going on five years with ours, have replaced one battery and one head unit.

What's wrong with the Dyson? I have had one now for 10 years and didn't realize it was a piece of junk.

They clog easily. My mom bought a dyson animal a few years back, Within a year it was thrown into the yard. My dad was constantly removing dog hair from the " special no loss of suction tubes" on top of the canister. My aunt has the yellow one with the ball at the base. The suction tube is too small and is constantly falling off.

I bought a 1973 Eureka from a thrift store for ten bucks in 2005. I had a little work done to it shortly after and I still have it.

All right! Something up my alley... I am a vacuum enthusiast.

First off, know that most of the brands I list are more expensive than what you would find at Sears or Macy's, and that I would recommend trying to buy them used on eBay or something. Nonetheless, I would argue that their higher quality makes it worth it.

There are some decent brands out there. The three that come to mind off the top of my head are Miele, Sebo, Simplicity, and Kirby We have had a Miele Callisto for close to eight years now, and have been quite satisfied with it. We have two long-hair cats, so hair is definitely a problem, and one of the nice features on the Miele is that the beater bar is designed so that you can pull it and clean it in a matter of minutes. Strong points for the Miele include quietness, power, and quality of design and construction. My only complaints are that the on/off switch has gotten a little finicky with age and that the lid that covers the attachments storage area is sometimes a little balky in opening -- both rather small issues, and ones that I have learned to live around. The Miele (a German bbrand) is like a Mercedes-Benz with the durability of a Lexus.

Besides the canister vacs, in past five or so years, Miele rolled out a totally new line of uprights that is probably the sickest line of uprights I have ever seen.

The Sebo is another nice German brand, but I've never used one, so the only feedback I can provide on it is that it is supposed to be about as nice as the Miele.

Simplicity is a step down in price and quality, but still a decent vacuum.

The Kirby is a durability and performance legend. Here is an article about it:

I have a 45-year-old Electrolux that runs really well, but we have a friend who has been a vacuum salesman/repairman for 25+ years, and he complains that the quality has declined recently. That said, an older Electrolux would be a nice machine, just with some compromises with modernity.

it's automatic.

We have a Nilfisk canister Hepa vac circa 1997 that I got as we were doing lead abatement in the house we owned. It has been used as a shop vac and if it fits in the hose it will get sucked up. Best for bare floors. I never plan on buying another; my wife hates it as cumbersome and heavy but it has outlasted evey lesser think she has brought home including Dyson and eureka.

Sorry, another vote for the Dyson. DC14 Animal here. Not possible to clog, believe me, I have sucked up a ton of drywall dust and all manner of home improvement debris and it never misses a beat.

The only thing I don't like about it is the accessory hose retracts on its own when you're using it and it pulls the vacuum across the floor toward you due to the high suction.
