This makes me want to dump the Miata and get a W140 or R129.

The BMW just isn't that great... Plus I have this irrational want for an old MB... O_o

I'm way under right now, but one major could triple the purchase price.

Guess I'm bored/lucky. Nothing to repair on the fleet for a while. Everything works. I'm sure I'll get my ass kicked next week for saying this.

E39 fanatics are steps away from starting a religion worshiping their cars. If a clean stick sport package wagon ever pops up close to me I would swoop it up.

E39's are worth it.

Quite possibly the best chassis/model I've ever dealt with in ~20yrs of being a professional auto mechanic (Or technician. Occasional magician.) The M5 is wonderful if you have the time/space to play with it, and the shop currently has a 540iT, Sport with M-Parallel wheels for sale...

But I think my ideal E39 would be a 530 wagon with a six-speed. The M54 is a great engine, and I don't need to go (real) fast to have a good time.

The V8 performance does not make up for Reliability and serviceability of the inline 6 for sure.

Ok Tyler. I have to ask. Just by sitting in the car and starting it up you could tell it was oil tubes rather than camshafts or something else? Seems you were right but realistically how certain could you be of that before opening it up? Or did you just get lucky this time? Beautiful car by the way. Makes me start thinking stupid thoughts

When you're sick of it I've got a 96 TDI that I'll trade you, plus 1 pushmower.

Which one is more practical as a daily commuter?

Probably the TDI. A riding mower would make the decision more difficult, as it might be faster than the TDI, but the pushmower does push the decision in the direction of the TDI.

The story is a bit of an exaggeration. I suspected after starting it up, popped the hood, and confirmed my suspicion. It was only ticking on one side. Never heard of a M119 with bad cams. It's always the tubes causing this "ticking" that I'm very familiar with. They also don't run quite right sometimes. I've read that people have driven with this noise for years and when finally fixed only shows superficial surface damage to the cams. I got a few great deals on R129 500SLs with this issue back in the day. Bad top hydraulics and/or a ticking motor made for beautiful examples that sold for peanuts.

The previous owner did say the oil tubes were done on the other side. Also has a rebuilt suspension and totally new rear SLS suspension. Need to get to the dealer to pull the whole maintenance history. I'm sure it would tell quite a story.

With the right connextions, you can buy all you can handle at low prices. You've just got to establish those connextions. Metro Phoenix should be rich with these years of S-Class 140s.

The South West, Phoenix/LA/SD is indeed rich with them. But I am not rich enough for them. Purchase price is not what concerns me. Maintenance costs are the nightmare.

$250 to paint bumpers. $100 used interior parts, $100 upholstery labor and $50 rubber floor mats later. Money well spent on this one. Looking near showroom fresh with 228,000 miles.
