A friend who sold wholesale told me several years ago each manufacturer sells about five different quality levels of their tires. So, for example, a Michelin could be a very good tire or a very marginal tire, depending on which level you bought. No surprise Wal-Mart gets the lowest price and quality versions available.

Anyone here in the tire business who could confirm?

I have heard this before and I believed it but I don't know of a source to confirm it.

Manufacturers definitely have different batches for different retailers. In a past job, we had specific variations for the big boxes, depending on what they wanted. The blue guys always wanted cheap cheap cheap, the guys that sold overpriced TVs always wanted flashy packaging, etc.

Back on topic, I went with the Pirellis. They're getting put on in two weeks so we will see what's what.

If the only criteria you are using is the brand name, you haven't done enough research. Every tire has three consumer rating categories on the sidewall; tread wear, temperature range and traction. The tread wear number should be as high as you can get, but remember that the scale varies from mfg to mfg. if you are in a hot climate, try for an A temperature range.

Hope this helps.

520 tread wear
A traction
B temperature
111 load
T speed

Grip>longevity for this vehicle, I'm happy if they only last 2 years but stick like BBQ sauce to your favorite shirt

The michelin on display at walmart today had a very stiff sidewall and rock hard tread area. I would take a chance on it. $79 for a 17 inch mid range tire, cheap.

I just put some Pirelli P7's on a car that had Michelin Primacy's. The P7's are not as nosily and give all the grip I can deal with.

They also seem to hold the road better at speeds in the 100 to 110 range. I don't do much of that here but out in west Texas where there is nothing for 30 to 40 miles...........

FYI, I finally retired the Scorpion ATR's. They did great for 3 years but hit the wear bars and now it's winter time.

Would definitely recommend.

What kind of vehicle? I have had good luck with Continental and Firestones on my truck.

I bought a set of Michelin's years ago and they cracked and got hard after a couple of years. They cost 30% more as well, not worth it IMHO.

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 2" lift.

BFG A/T KO2's are on it now, since it's being relegated to backup vehicle and no longer 100mile daily commutes.
