Need advice on selling a car
Have a 2009 Nissan Murano SL package I am trying to sell. I'm having a difficult time with selling it. I haven't had one offer from anyone but agencies that are wanting to charge me to sell my car, or paypal scams. I have a decent ad, the pictures are ok, and the price is fair. It's been 2 months. I was hoping some advice from someone more experienced than myself with selling the car. I have it on 5 other sites as well and haven't had one bite.
2009 Nissan Murano SL Here is the ad. I just don't get it. Can you see anything wrong with the ad or pictures or what I'm doing wrong?

Here is some not-so-helpful advise ...
I think cars, like houses, or anything else for the most part sell themselves. If someone is looking for that type of car, it will sell. For example, about 3 maybe 4 years ago, Euro Rear Headrest kits were all the rage for the W123 crowd. They were selling for $400 and you could not find or buy a kit fast enough. Now, half price if that and it takes a long time to sell. Have you tried the forums which are dedicated to that make and model? There is a niche market for any car. Heck, even a Chevy Chevette has a forum and a niche in the market. That was my first new - new car, and I would like to buy one but I cannot find one ... Patience and have you tried parking the car during daylight hours in a really high traffic / high volume area? |

I would take the car into Carmax. We sold our 2012 Honda Odyssey to them and they gave us more than I was expecting. Its a very painless way to get rid of a newer used car in good condition. I would imagine they would give you a fair price on that since its a crossover and those are still very popular.

It is VERY hard to sell a used car as a private owner around here. It is so hard to compete now with dealerships. The finding you financing and pricing cars by payments. Very few people willing to do their own legwork, or in possession of any sort of haggling skills now days. I sold three cars this year, i ended up taking payments on all three. I always said I wasn't a bank, but was sick of my driveway being clogged up.
By the way... two are making their payments, one a bit behind, and the third made one payment.

I tried kbb for a private party value. It's a little tough to tell the exact condition from the pics, so I guessed "very good" and it spat back $13,874, so maybe come down a little on the price.
I sold a Kawasaki motorcycle recently. Because of the facts that 1. I mainly just wanted it gone. 2. I only paid $1500 for it in the first place, and 3. It had over 34,000 miles on it (that's a lot for a bike), I only asked a grand for it. I was able to find a buyer by word of mouth without even having to list it anywhere.

A 17K dollar car is going to take a while to sell. Not everyone has that kind of cash. In fact, I'd bet most people interested in the car would need financing. That's where the dealerships beat you.

What they said, plus, IMHO, the ad is a bit wordy (needs to be shorter) and difficult to read with no paragraphs. Edit your text to the attention span of the average reader. In fact, drop it in MS Word and do the word count and grade level check. If it's above a tenth grade level, it is too high.

If you go the carmax route, detail the interior/engine bay/exterior with a fine tooth comb. That will bump the price up (since they won't have to spend time cleaning it before putting it on the lot)

Unfotunatly this is a car is financed world these days. Too many potential buyers want to see so much per month in place.
I might contact a Nissan dealer to see if they would consider selling it for you on some kind of consignment basis. I also think a lot of potential car buyers are all too aware of what it costs to get things fixed after warranty and as a result are buying new. You could also try putting in into a car auction with a reserve. The fee to do so is usually very small.. Locally there are far too many used cars on the local market. A friend of mine was given an old 1995 Honda accura with 150,000 kilometers on it the other day. That is just around 90,000 miles. The car has no rust and was clean yet the seller had not gotten any interest in it. It has a few small issues but taking it to a garage would cost quite a lot to get them rectified. Doing it himself my friend very little.. Times have changed so much many cars are going to the auto wreckers that a days labor and some parts new or used would make them still good reliable drivers. Times have changed. Last edited by barry12345; 10-19-2015 at 11:13 AM. |

Priced too high. Doesn't need to be "priced fair" rather it needs to be a very good deal so either a dealer wants it to flip or a private individual thinks its a good enough deal that it's worth avoiding the simplicity of a dealer.
Unless someone like a parent is purchasing it for their kids, 90% of people with have to finance it. People with that kind of cash sitting around are going to buy a newer vehicle. $14000 is that number. I'm using my dealer auction app to pull recent auction sales. The highest money they ever brought (SL AWD) with comparable mileage brought $12500. Most go for $11-12k. NADA retail on the vehicle is $19600. Most dealers actually sell their cars for around NADA clean trade in, which is $16100. You need to be considerably below that. Also, too wordy. This isn't some enthusiast car that people need to know the service history. Bullet points work well for a car like this -2009 Nissan Murano SL with only 53,000 original miles -Very well equipped with heated leather seats, bose stereo, sunroof and lots of other great luxury features. -2 owner, clean history report, very well maintained car. I recently put on new tires and brakes. -Super clean inside and out. Never smoked in and always well looked after. -Smooth, fast, comfortable, loaded to the gills and totally reliable. Priced $5000 below NADA retail for quick sale. Feel free to call, text or email with any questions. Thanks.

I looked at the ad. I would definitely ad more pics. Especially of the exterior. I would elaborate a little more On service records. If you have some. Otherwise pretty short and sweet. Just my 2cent, GLWS
