Horsepower / second gear start / W124 question
I going through my book (forgot the name, but the one everyone hear recommends ) on the 300E info and I think I remember it having a discrepency .
Horsepower - It lists 117(yep! I am sure that is what my book said, so hopefully it looks like a major typo ) for the 91 300E M103. Is it so low vs the 92 and up? Second Gear start - I thought it only went up to mid year 1991 and there are some 1991's with first gear start. Is this the case? The 91 300E I am going to go see this week, I hope has a first gear start, since I would like the MB but don't want something horribly slow (ie: slower than the Ford 3.0 V6 ). thanks Last edited by yosshimura; 06-03-2002 at 10:08 AM. |

U saying your car has 117hp?!?
My 87 300E has 177hp Stock. I thought yours had close to 200hp. The good thing is yours weighs more so I i can jump off the line a bit faster Kinda odd that the 86-89 were faster than the 90-93. You can defeat the first gear start pretty easly, do a search for 300E First gear start, u'll find tons of info! Good Luck |

The 91 300E's have the same HP as the earlier ones. The horsepower gain on 300E's came on the 93 300E model year, which had the 3.2 liter M104 engine.
I don't know exactly when the first gear start appeared, but I believe it was in the fall of 1991 for 1992 models. FWIW, I think in 1990 the 300CE's got more horsepower with an early 3.0 liter 24 valve version of the M104 engine.

Here is a link to the Mercedes Benz North America webpage with the details on MB models in the past 15 years:
http://www.mbusa.com/brand/container.jsp?/overview/overview_engine.jsp&yearModelCode=88_E300S&class=88_E&rnav=024568&menu=2_2 Can you believe that the 1991 300E's original retail price was $47,200? Also, it's amazing that when the hood / grill, headlights, etc. were updated in 1994 and the badge changed to E320, the retail price was dropped to $42,500! I'd recommend bookmarking this page. I've never been able to navigate back to this page from the MBUSA.com homepage.

Well, it's not really odd that 90-92's were slower that 86-89's.
They had a second gear start and were heavier. 90-92's were not faster than 93's because 93 300E's are the same as 94-95 E320's - they have the same chasis #, VIN #, and engine #. 1993 300E's / 1994-1995 E320's were the fastest because they all had the 3.2 liter M104 engine. But in any event, off the line acceleration is not the strong point of these cars anyway. If you're looking for a fast car off the line, get a BMW. These cars were meant to cruise at high speeds. Any of the 300E's / E320's will cruise effortlessly and speeds well above that which you will feel comfortable driving at.

Btw, I am in no way buying this car thinking it is fast, not the role of a Mercedes, I think, but like I said before, I want something that can keep up with traffic on the fast lane on the highway |
