We had one which looked exactly like this one. a 318 with five speed and posi. I sold it and it was one of those I regret not keeping longer.

They are also astonishingly quick on the autocross.

They all have only two cylinders and two wheels and are air cooled .

Called 'Beemers' by those who know and love them, they don't have the same reputation as the four wheeled Bimmers do .

That '72 was a short framed one and they were well know for high speed wobbles that caused many crashes and deaths .

A BMW Dealer I know from back then, says there was a very basic manufacturing defect that caused it and tried to get the factory interested in correcting it, they weren't and he fixed quite a few but doesn't seem to want to share the info on exactly what the problem was/is .

I was lucky and my '72 R75/5 didn't have that problem, a good thing too as the /5's were not supposed to be ridden fast yet I did and never crashed it although I do remember one ass chapping speed wobble .

Odd perhaps. I just was never a big fan of their car products. No particular reason I can think of either. Although I always heard they were good drivers.

There were a lot of Mercedes and bmw products not far away in garages and barns. About twenty five miles from us. Still probably some there. German nationals purchased a lot of smaller farms in a certain area near here during the cold war.

Some visited their holdings on occasion. There were so many another German national lady set up a German bakery. Possibly on the expectations the property holders were going to move here. It survived in the small New Brunswick town of Port Elgin till recent times. That town was about the epicenter of their holdings.

I think the farm purchases that were cheap at the time also allowed them to come and live here very easily. If things got too hot in Europe. I could not see them as an investment.

To my knowledge none of them ever really lived here. Small farms had well passed the point of being viable financially by the time they purchased them.

There also was no employment there besides a declining fishery. People still live in that area today but there is little employment to speak of. Other than a newer vinyl window manufacturer. Owned by a large national retail grocery chain. This chain also buys up any decent size apartment buildings that are marketed. Plus is somewhat vertically integrated in the supply of it's food enterprises. Just another corporate entity on an endless growth spiral. They maxed out the amount of food stores they can have under Canada's monopolistic laws years ago.

A German bricklayer I used from time to time kept an eye on the foreign nationals local holdings. I still suspect all those properties might be still owned by them. Or their children by now or just deserted. Still they would not be worth much today anyways.

Many of the cars they imported might still be there. The condition of them now after all the years might be pretty poor though. I do know one eight series bmw was sold some years back out of all the cars reputed to be still on all those properties. I did catch two heavier Mercedes cars at a very obscure auto wreckers there. They were gone in a heartbeat. One had the 15 inch bunts. I thought I could get them in a day or two. No way to be certain they came off the farms but likely. Never saw either of them on the road.

I just tightened the steering damper and the wobble went away.

Yes of course but then you're back to riding a plodder and I don't ride that way .

My new to me 1975 BMW R60/6 barn find Moto (! 8,000 miles yahoo !) also has a very slight oscillation of the bars if I let go of them above 40 MPH or so, I tried setting the damper on it's lowest setting and don't like it but I don't think it'll ever become a true tank slapper either so I'll just live with it, I suppose I'm not supposed to ever take my hands off the grips, right ? .

I take it you never owned one. The only questiom mark is the transmission. If i had found one with a manual which is quite rare, id still own it. The 6cyl diesel delivered more power and better fuel economy than the venerable 617, and while slightly more tempermental, was pretty close to just as reliable. Had a few injector issues and that was it.

In fact i liked it so much i found a ridiculously rare bmw diesel powered lincoln so i could have my American over the top 80s luxury with german fuel economy.
