I forgot to mention this as it happened last week.

My front Door has a security door that opens outwards. When I went out the front door the skunk was evidently right there at the top of the step. If it had not been for the security door and the skunk running I opened that I would have stepped on the Skunk. With the likely unpleasant results.

I saw a mama skunk and her little skunklets strolling through the neighborhood. Very cute.

Kalifornia Raccoons

They don't here ! .

I often see a whole family, mom & kits crossing the street in the wee hours, dad who looks like he weighs 25 pounds (!), standing up on the curbstone on his hind legs and glaring at me....

I remember *very* aggressive 'coons Down East too when I were a lad .

Sunday on my way home from the autocross, I was on a little two lane and up ahead saw an animal crossing the road....about the size of a squirrel....I lifted the gas....then two more smaller followed. As I got closer I realized it was mama skunk and two juveniles. I swerved a bit at the last possible instance. I got one of them with the trailer wheels. I felt bad but did not consider stopping because of being sprayed by mama.

Concerning the spraying I am wondering how Animal Control deals with them. Assuming you got one caged in a trap what prevents them from spraying at that point, or in the vehicle during transport, or when they get to the destination?

I came out to bring in the bowel of Cat food and there was the Skunk eating as fast as it could. Fortunately it got scared and ran off.

There is 2 stray male Cats I feed like the one with the wounded neck in the picture. I went for a walk one morning and looked behind me and there walking across the street towards me that looked like one of the 2 mentioned and I though it was one of them following me.

Then it turned a bit and I noticed it had a Collar so it was not one of the ones I feed.

In different areas of the neighborhood on walks I have seen 4 solid black Cats and only one Siamese Cat (not seen one for 10 years).

Road Kills:
In the residential areas Cats next would be Possums.
On the main highway it is Possums and Cats and maybe once a year a Skunk.

Dogs don't get killed as often as they used to since the leash law started being enforced. If there is a dead dog it is usually a puppy or less often some other small dog.

On one of my walks I found a Cat's Tail and nothing else of the Cat. The Tail was next to an old Chair and some other stuff a Homeless Person had set up.

For a brief second I thought the Cat may have been eaten by the Homeless but there was no other evidence that that happen; no fire or bones or fur and so on just the Tail.

Post Local Skunk

I've not noticed the smell of the skunk under my house but I walked out side the other day and the stink was strong at the sidewalk so he's still around .

? Do Coyotes eat them ? .

I think Coyotes stay away from them as do Bears.

My Cats run away from Skunks.

Being human if you could kill a skunk you could be carful to stay away from what ever area of the skunk produces the spray but you would need to know something about the skunk's anatomy.
Also there is not much to eat on the skunk that comes around here. He is mostly fur.
In some survival situation you are better off eating Bugs then fooling with a skunk. Once the skunk smell is on you even if you are physically able to hunt your smell will surly alert any game.

I read somewhere that Porcupines are supposed to be good to eat. Just avoid the quills and their underside does not have the quills.
