Last time Mercedes made top 10 List?

This year there isn't one Mercedes in Car and Driver's top ten list. Nissan got two spots!

Anyone know what the year and model was for the last Mercedes to make the list? Just curious.

While we're at it:

What would be your Top 5 List for Mercedes models (regardless of year)??

In the 20 or so years they've been running it, I don't think Mercedes has ever made the list. Remember that they have a max. price cutoff of around $50k (inflation-adjusted over time), meaning that the only Mercedes realistically eligible have been the C Class/190 series and the low-end E class. C&D has shown a preference over the years for the sportier BMW 3 series (many appearances) over the baby Benz.

Yeah, I forgot about the price cap. I still wonder if the 190 16-v made the list. It's sticker price was around $42,500 when it arrived. Great car!

I was reading an issue of Road and Track and in a column about their past issues, I remember them rewarding the Mercedes 560SEC something...
and also a praise for the 1973 Mercedes 350SLC (4.5) as the best grand touring car or something...

I used to have a subscription from about '81-'87 and don't recall MB EVER being on the list. I wonder if anyone has kept their back-issues?
The 380SEL made the very first Top Ten list by Car and Driver...in 1983, I believe. I remember seeing it on the internet somewhere.

It depends on whose top ten list you find.

My top ten list is almost all benz!! hehehe

As far as car mags go, its rare that they actually favor a mercedes in one of their lists.

And the W124 chassis is known as one of the safest cars on the road, and one of the best used car values, from what I have heard.

I could care less what critics say about a mercedes, I will drive them regardless of what any survey, poll, or magazine article says.

I read all the big auto publications, and I will say that 10best lists and "all star" lists are a load of crap. They are features that sell more magazines, and almost always are a list of fun to drive cars which excell in one area: entertaining the editors on their favorite twisty back road. Long term value, overall quality, and solidity are not issues that play major roles in the decisions.
The US car mags seem to have fallen in quality over the last years, expecially Motor Trend, which is a joke. Car and Driver is fun, but their reviews leave much to be desired- it's always the "fun to drive qoutient" that wins the day. Automobile is well written and is better than the others. The British mags are the the best, and the difference in priorities when reviewing cars is clearly evident- quality is much more important, as is gas mileage.
The price cap in the test this year was about $64,000. That the E class didn't is interesting. The C class doesn't deserve it.

My favorite models:
240D
450SEL
W210 diesel E class (any)
S320 (long) (only with 5 speed auto)
the 126- its got sex appeal.

Mike
