They are available at Rite Aide and Walgreens and are cheap. I won't hurt to carry some on your glove compartment.

Iodine tablets were recently supplied to every household under the "Nuclear Emergency Plan".

Why?
"Iodine", supplied as "Potassium Iodate" is an anti-radiation protecting agent and will help prevent development of thyroid cancer in people exposed to fall-out from a nuclear accident (e.g. Sellafield) or a nuclear bomb.

Iodine has the ability to prevent the absorption of 99% of radioactive iodine from nuclear fall-out.

The World's worst nuclear accident occurred at Chernobyl in 1986 - it scattered radioactive iodine over thousands of miles throughout Europe.

Fortunately, much of the affected area was sparsely populated, and even more fortunate was the fact that the Soviets had large stockpiles of potassium iodate available which they distributed to people living close to the reactor within hours of the accident.

In other areas, however, distribution of potassium iodate tablets was much less thorough and , in addition, much of the population was deficient in dietary iodine resulting in iodine deficient thyroid glands taking up greater amounts of radioactive iodine. According to the World Health Organisation, the disaster will cause fifty thousand new cases of thyroid cancer among young people living in the area most affected by the nuclear disaster. Researchers have found that in certain parts of Belarus, for example, 36.4% of children, who were under the age of four at the time of the accident, can expect to develop thyroid cancer. An increase in incidence has been documented in areas up to 500km from the site.

It is also note-worthy that in the years following the 1986 Chernobyl accident, thyroid cancer is the only cancer to have seen a significantly increased incidence showing that the greatest risk posed by a nuclear disaster is from the radioactive isotopes of iodine especially.

IODINE (POTASSIUM IODATE) AS THYROID-BLOCKING AGENTS
The thyroid gland - and especially the thyroid gland of children - is vulnerable to atomic injury since it absorbs both non-radioactive and radioactive iodine, and normally it retains much of this element. The amount of iodine taken up by the thyroid is governed by the amount already present. Therefore, a thyroid relatively empty of iodine will take up more iodine than one already replete with it.

When non-radioactive iodine is made available in the blood for absorption by the thyroid gland in advance of radioactive iodine, the gland will absorb and retain so much that it becomes saturated with non-radioactive iodine. When saturated, the thyroid gland can absorb only about one percent additional iodine, including radioactive forms that later may become available in the blood. It is then said to be 'blocked'. Excess iodine in the blood is rapidly eliminated by the action of the kidneys. Therefore, potassium iodine, if taken in time, prevents the thyroid gland's uptake of radioactive iodine.

"Iodine" tablets must be administered just before or very shortly after exposure to the radioactive iodine. If potassium iodate is administered later than four hours after an individual has suffered an acute ingestion or inhalation of radioactive iodine, its effectiveness as a thyroid-blocking agent is less than 50 percent. Furthermore, after six hours, the blocking action is essentially nil.

KELP
Although kelp is comparatively rich in iodine, it should be noted that Kelp tablets are not an appropriate alternative to iodine supplement tablets. It is calculated, on the basis of average iodine content of 225 micrograms that 444 Kelp tablets would need to be consumed per day by an adult to provide the same protection as one 130mg Potassium iodate tablet.

ADVERSE EFFECTS OF IODINE RELEASING AGENTS
Adverse effects associated with 'iodine' include skin rash, swelling of the salivary glands and 'iodism' ( a metallic taste, burning mouth and throat, sore teeth and gums, symptoms of a head cold and occasionally, stomach upset and diarrhoea). When potassium iodate or iodate is consumed as a prophylactic agent, such adverse effects are obviously outweighed by the benefits and are unlikely because of the short term use. Patients with existing thyroid disease should seek medical advice.

ADVICE TO PATIENTS USING POTASSIUM IODATE
Patients taking this medicine for radiation exposure should be advised to:

Take this medicine only when directed to do so by state or local public authorities.
Do not take more of it and do not take it more often than directed. Taking more of the medicine will not give better protection and may result in a greater chance of side effects.
If Potassium iodate upsets the stomach, patients are advised to take it after meals or with food or milk. If stomach upset continues (including nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, or diarrhoea) or if an allergic reaction occurs, patients are advised to consult their doctor.
For adults each tablet should be taken with plenty of water or milk. For babies and children the dose may be crushed between two teaspoons and mixed with a small amount of a palatable food eg jam, or drink.

To store this medicine:

Keep out of reach of children.
Store away from heat and direct light, in a dry environment at room temperature.

Do not store the tablet form of this medicine in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink, or in other damp places. Heat or moisture may cause the medicine to break down. Liberation of iodine will cause a yellow (acceptable) to brown (unacceptable) discolouration.

DOSING

Dosage is as instructed on the package.

Now there's an idea. Terrorists build Monster Trucks, get drunk and just run everyone over!

As for me, if any biological or other related weapons do damage in my hometown (High Point? Yeah, right! ) I'll just go outside apologize to God and my dogs for the stupidity of the human race. Hurl up a couple of lungs and call it a day.

I agree with G-Benz. Duct tape sounds pretty hokey to me. If they wanted to really havoc there wouldn't be a damn thing we could do about it. I live right across the street from our main "we don't gaurd it" water supply.

I live less than two miles from NSA, and would consider I am at ground zero. I will never know what hit me if there is any massive nuke going off around here. So my attitude is not to do anything. Why cave in to the terrorist's plot. They mean to come scare us and I refuse to let them win.

It's ridiculous...Duct tape and plastic would be useless...You can't seal up every little opening in your home, and if you did, how would you breathe? It's just news hype.

The terrorists want to disrupt our lifestyles and cause us to live in fear, that's the whole point, and I REFUSE to let them succeed.

I agree, unfortunately, it's our very own government that is providing us with these "tips"...

There's some very funny stuff there...

But really...Seriously...Aren't the "Bush-as-cowboy" jokes wearing a little thin by now? And where are the "Political Correctness Police" when you need them? Isn't portraying someone as a lawless cowboy merely because they are from Texas just as bigoted as portraying someone as a terroristic towel-head merely because they are from the Middle-East? Where are the morally outraged defenders of Texans?

Great point!

Actually, I've got it all figured out now! I just had an epiphany! This war thing is not all about the OIL...It's all about the DUCT TAPE! There are no chemical weapons, it's just a Presidential conspiracy to help his big-tape business buddies sell more duct tape! I'll bet Bush owns stock in duct tape companies!

The sad part is...someone will actually BELIEVE what I just said.

LOL My wife and I shared a laugh this weekend regarding the same thing. Duct Tape is on sale at a local store for 2.99 roll I told my wife they must be ducking a price gouging suit. We also mentioned GW in the Duct Tape racket.

WASHINGTON (WT) - A skittish President Bush stocked up on duct tape this week to use in the event of a biological attack on Washington.

"We're just worried as heck over at the White House," said the President as he deposited an armful of gray duct tape rolls onto the conveyor belt of a checkout line in a D.C.-area Safeway. "You know, you can never be too safe when it comes to all this biowarfare stuff."

During the same errand, Bush also purchased two cases of bottled water and several cans of non-perishable vegetables, meat, and fruit.

Last Friday, the nation's terror alert level was elevated to orange, denoting a "High" risk of a terrorist attack, with New York City and Washington, D.C. cited as probable targets. Federal officials have advised citizens to use duct tape and/or plastic sheeting to hermetically seal themselves in a "safe room" in the event of a biological terrorist attack.

Bush has stated that in the event of an attack, the second-floor bathroom in the east wing of the White House will serve as a safe room for himself, his wife, Vice President Cheney, the Cabinet, and a cadre of Secret Service agents.
