Number plates
Here in the state of New South Wales in Australia we have to have plates front and back. They used to be ugly black on yellow but for some time now other varieties have also been available. We can also choose our own letters and numbers. Have a look at:

lax about license plates
You should go to N. Carolina- I sent a friend an old NH plate of mine, and he used it for months, just for the hell of it. His car was registered in NC, he had a euro plate on the front, and my old expired NH plate on the back. Never got pulled over! In MA or VA, they'd send you to the gallows for such a thing!
As a sidenote, we have 6 million kinds of license plates here in VA. As if that weren't enough, it seems as if every 2 out of 3 people have some kind of stupid vanity-plate message on theirs. Makes me want to run some people off the road, when I read plates that say things like "BillNME" or "kidzvan" or similar dumb stuff. My one favorite though: on a new white Lincoln Town car: "captlsm" JAS
