If their store makes the assumption that I am guilty of shoplifting prior to any evidence of same, I absolutely have a right to contest that position. I contest it by not proving to them that I did not steal their merchandise.
That being said, I may accede to their wishes if the time involved is minimal and the potential to limit an altercation is great. I'm not strongly principled regarding the position if practicality would rule.
I find it disturbing that folks like you will simply take their position, one assuming dishonesty on your part, and accept it as the norm.

A bit of a difference. They wish to be sure that the bearer of the card or the check is the actual individual who signs the check. This is simply good business practice and I have no issue with it. Anybody could possess another person's card or checkbook with relative ease. If I do have an issue with it (I do because of the time........), I pay with cash.

Let's look at "embarrassment", shall we?
How would the people who check receipts be "embarrassed" if I decline to show them the receipt? They might be angered, but they certainly cannot be embarrassed.
If you feel that I should not cause them this anger due to the actions of their employer, I accept that that position. And, I will not cause them this anger, provided that the time spent to eliminate this anger is less than 10 seconds. If a line were to develop to prevent departure from the store, their anger takes a secondary position to my time.
It all depends on how much you wish to bend to accommodate the stupidity of society. Clearly, you have more capability in this regard than I do.
