Coach who gave "Crybaby" award 2 13-year old given "You're Fired, Dumbass" award

NJ Coach Draws Fire for 'Crybaby' Award
by KYW's Matt Leon

The Pleasantville, NJ school board voted Tuesday night to fire a middle school basketball coach because he gave a "crybaby award" to one of his players.

The coach handed out the award to the 13-year-old player at a team banquet.

As he made the presentation, Guillen reportedly told the audience he was getting the award because "he begged to get in the game, and all he did was whine."

The trophy itself consisted of a baby figuarine on a pedestal. To make matters worse, the youngster's name was misspelled.

This is the child's father, Terrance Philo:

"He was hurt. How would you feel if someone gave you an award with a crybaby on the trophy, in front of your peers?"

There is a question whether or not the firing is legal, because it's the superintendent that has authority to hire and fire and he has recommended lesser discplinary action for first-year coach James Guillen.

The teachers' union also says the firing is too harsh.

That's the part that kills me, just how much do teachers think they can get away with?

Then he needs commended. There is no "I" in team.

Of course if the coach really just disliked the kid for no reason, ten he needs punished.

Not having been there he may deserve praise or fired depending on what really went on.
My thoughts exactly.

Furthur, most kids these day ARE crybabies. They've never been spanked in their lives, mommy (single) comes running to their defense every time they f**kup, they've been "trained" to be crybabies. Look at the population as a whole. NO ONE takes responsibility for their actions anymore and they piss and moan till "mommy" (substitute "Gov't" for the adults in the crowd) gives them what they want.

I wasn't there and don't know the kid or the coach, but if the super and board doesn't think he should get fired for it, that's probably telling right there.

We have "whining mommies" here!

They complain that their precious kid "isn't getting enough playing time" or "everyone else is a ball hog"...so when the coach reverses the situation, their precious kid demonstrates their lack of ability on the field in front of everyone when given the opportunity to see "what we were missing" in the first place!

Coaches bench players for a reason! And aside from rec leagues, the coach has a REAL right to choose who gets to play and who does not! If the kid can't do the job, then he/she doesn't need to be out there mucking it up for the rest of the team!

Wait a minute! What was this thread about again?!

All I know is I wouldn't want an insensitive jackass like that around my kid. Teaching and demeaning are two different things. This guy should start thinking about a new career.

I don't care if he was or not. There is nothing that a child can do that could justify a carefully planned public humiliation. Adult vs. child -- get it? Teacher vs. student -- get it? One is held to a higher standard of behavior than the other. You've made one thing pretty clear -- you don't belong around children either.

The kid got the spanking that he needed years ago.

Oh poor, poor child, he got humiliated. Maybe this'll come to mind next time he cries about not getting something and will keep his spoiled mouth shut.

Yes, it'll affect him for years. I say in a POSITIVE way. When parents don't LIGHTLY discipline their kids early, the lessons and "spankings" get harder and harder.

The parents of the Columbine killers said their kids were "good kids" (well..., except for murdering all their classmates, but....)

Neither do I.

Having dated NUMEROUS women with pure demon-spawn, I WILL NOT date another woman IN MY LIFE who has ANY children. 99.99% of them are evil, spoiled, worthless human sewage (AFAIC, due entirely to parents NOT "training them up in the way they should go".)

Most children/teenagers that I run across these days fit into this category. But then I spend a lot of time in Boulder where there is no "parenting" just "love the child and they will find their path the way they need to" (while dealing drugs, ripping off cars, houses, businesses, shooting up high schools, etc.)

Old enough to know it would shut the little s**t up or get him off the team!

Once again, the spoiled brat has learned if he cries hard enough, he'll get what he wants. Coach made him feel bad, so he gets coach fired. Works well, eh???

Couldn't the coach possibly thought of something other that immature humiliation tactics?

Many teachers use humiliation as their main tactic because their not capable of teaching. I'll never my HS senior year economics instructor called a student and idiot in class, which pissed off his father to the point that he came to class the following day and said in front of the class if someone spent the money for an MBA and is only teaching HS economics who's the real idiot here? the guy was a big shot so that made it even more humorous.

How anyone can condone a pee-on treating kids like that is very sad indeed, the poor kid is likely more screwed up than he was before the incident I hope they sue his ass off.

The guys a thug plain and simple I bet Kerry Edwards could think of a million positive approaches to handle this kid rather than humiliating him.

The Kid needs a swift kick in the azz and both of his parents too fo not teaching him to behave like a young adult rather than a 2 year old having a tantrum.
We must live on different planets. I haven't met this "current batch of undisciplined brats running around thinking everyone owes them a living" you're referring to. I've met some kids in my life that could stand to get a clue, but I would generally chalk that up to inadequate parenting skills. People with inadequate parenting skills often provide poor day-to-day examples for their children and may resort to violence and humiliation in order to impose their will because they know no other way. Skilled teachers are capable of using their experience and intellect to get the most from their charges and teach them the difference between appropriate and inappropriate behavior. Apparently lacking those basic skills, this lame brain chose another path and earned his just reward.

Does he have nothing better to do than to publicly humiliate a kid!? Sheesh. The kid needs to grow up but that's no way to apply intelligence..or lack there-of. Still trying to find adequate life forms on earth. Beam me out.
Word up bro.

A coach is a teacher -- I see no real distinction. All this idiot had to do was bench the kid every time he whined -- it's that simple.

"Can I go in coach? Please? Can I, can I, can I, can I? Please?!?!? I wanna play! Waaaaaaaaaaaa!!"

"Sorry son, 'you whine -- grab some pine' -- you know the rules. I really hope we can get you in there next game!"

How hard is that? If the kid doesn't stop, he just doesn't play. That simple technique would have worked wonders with just about any kid I ever knew -- and just possibly might have taught him a valuable life lesson that didn't involve inappropriate public humiliation.

Bottom line....the Coach showed bad judgment.

However, perhaps we should amend the Constitution to include Crybabies Rights
