Musical Instruments...What do you play?

Back in highschool I was involved in the marching band, jazz band, and regular class band. My specialty was the saxophone. varying from alto, tenor, and baritone.

Now, I own a Selmer alto sax and practice about once a month, or whenever I feel like it. Mostly I play the piano, or work with my harmonica. To tell you the truth, wetting the reed, fastening the ligature, connecting the neck, and adjusting the strap seem to be too much effort for me as opposed to just sitting down and banging some keys.

Banging keys? I guess we're ALL musicians. Listen to the rythm of the cracking keys,.....clicker CLACKER, clicker CLACKER, WHOOA OH OH OHHHHH.

So...What do/did YOU play be it hobby or profession?

Howdy All,
Took piano lessons for five years back in the 60s. The only thing I learned was to hate it.

I played trombone in 8th grade...I would have continued into high school, except I started too late and the only band they had at my high school was an "advanced" band.

I also played piano in elementary school, but that was against my will...

Nowadays, I mostly play air guitar

I teach guitar and occasionally perform. Mostly wedding gigs and background music. Speaking of musical instruments, here's a pic of my latest guitar under construction. Should be ready for delivery in a week or so. These were taken last month.

Rest of them here

Big hobby for me!

Played flute and piccolo in high school band, organ and guitar at church, and bass in jazz band.

Played piano in college, took up xylophone, and other percussion instruments...and more bass in the college jazz band.

Played bass in a country and western band (yee haw) and keyboards in another road band. Giggin' is HARD work if you have a day job too!

Marriage and family kinda ended the road scene.

Still play bass and keyboards in my church.

My daughter has now followed my footsteps and has become a budding pianist...

Played guitar when younger. I guess I had the talent(from what my teachers told my mom) but didn't have the patience to stick with it. Was learning to play classical guitar when I quit taking lessons back in junior high. Plinked around with it off and on over the following 10 years. Can't remember much any more. I think the only thing I can play now is the chords to "Louie Louie" and "House of the Rising Sun".
(Boy! Does that show my age or what )

Drums.

Here's the "Cliff's Notes" version of my musical career. Most of the "regulars" here already know a lot of this.

Playing for 20+ years.

Guitar, piano, and drum lessons when I was a wee lad.

Middle and high school band, orchestra, marching band, etc...many years of private lessons, many afternoons spent playing along to records and cassettes in a bedroom, many noisy garage bands....

Music major in college (received a couple of music scholarships), was in the orchestra, jazz band, symphonic band, marching band, funk ensemble, percussion ensemble, latin ensemble, MIDI ensemble, several original bands, several cover bands, taught drum lessons, taught at high school band camps, blah, blah, blah....

Spent several years touring with various cover bands....

Learned to do custom drum work, repairs, restorations, etc....

Moved to Atlanta.

Had good regional success with rock/hip-hop/funk style band for a couple of years, recorded and released independent album, played lots of good shows.

Aforementioned band became stagnant, so I joined an EXCELLENT rock band with some longtime friends/players.

Major record label deal # 1. Album. Much, much touring. Decent amount of rock radio airplay.

Falling out with label # 1.

Limbo for 2 years. Lots of for-hire recording studio work....

Major record label deal # 2. Album. Much, much touring, including Australia. Even better amount of rock radio airplay. ESPN uses music on major league baseball coverage.

Falling out with label # 2.

Band becomes frustrated after 7 years and two incompetent record labels, so we "call it a day" while musical dignity still intact.

Happy to be home for a while with the girlfriend and the dogs.

Doing TONS of recording studio work lately....and tinkering with my Mercedes diesel fleet.

I'll undoubtedly be back on the road as soon as I'm done being pi$$ed off at the current state of the music business.

Mike

I'm hearing grumbling among my professionally-adept musician associates...what gives these days?
