State legislator reinstated the basic driving test . 14 - 18 year olds require a student driving course plus a driving skills test .18-24 year require an adult drivers course certificate as well as the driving test . Before the parents could fill out the paperwork and check the box on the bottom of the form waiving the driving portion.

We just went through this. They told us to check the box and they would issue my son his license. When we insisted that he take the driving test the lady became upset and told us "you know if he dosent pass it he dosent get his license right"? OK.............? What did I miss here.

Test is mandatory, but the test is on a closed course that tests your ability to stay in your traffic lane and make a three-point turn without bumping the curb.

In colorado, the have mandatory tests and mandatory classes (classroom and driving) for kids under 18. Kids are required to have their leaners permit for a full year, but they can get one when they turn 15. My daughter is planning on being there on her 15th birthday.

The Texas law changed to that effect in August 31 2009. I think it was prudent to do so. Already, too many Texas adults drive erratically as it is to assume that a newly-anointed teen driver could fare any better...

We've had mandatory driver's ed and test since 2001 for unlicensed persons under 18; 30 hours classroom, six hours behind the wheel or simulator + behind wheel; must be via certified instructor curriculum, not parents.

I don't remember when Texas went to no driving test, and they did it to save money for the DPS. Apparently that did not work out so well.

I got my drivers lisence when I was 16 in Texas and it just required passing a written test and a driving test. You could get your lisence at 14 if your parents said you needed it, and at 12 if it was a 'hardship case'.

You also could get a lisence at 14 if you were married and your spouse was over 18 years of age. You could drink booze pubicly at age 14 if your spouse was over age 21.

You could get a motorcycle lisence, under 5 hp, at age 10 if you needed it to go to work.

Things were a little different 50 years ago.....

Texas needs to make it stricter; all the states do.

CA we had to pass the written test at the DMV, then we got a learners permit, but that wasn't valid until it was signed by a behind the wheel instructor (normally the coach at the high school, but you could higher a privet instructor), once you had 3 lessons with an instructor plus 6 months behind the wheel with a parent, then you qualified to take the behind the wheel test at the DMV. If you passed that you got a license... back in my day (2001) you could get your license at 16, but now I hear you have to be 18 in CA.

BTW recently drove to see my mom in San Antonio, Texas didn't seem to have bad drivers until I was driving the I35... those people are lucky they are in Texas, yes they drive bad but at least your freeways have some room. In CA those people would get killed pretty quick.

I did 60 (yes SIXTY) hours of logged driving before I was eligible for getting a probationary type license (18 month period). Any infraction restarted the period. This was in MD.

I really think there should be more...more instruction, more behind the wheel driving (especially in various traffic and weather conditions).

On a scarier note I went past a truck driving school today. On the huge sign over the building it said "three weeks to a new career"

At least two years over the road experience used to be required before any one would hire you. The neighbor went to that school and at 19 hes driving a flatbed . Hes only been driving two years !
