From the Earth to the Moon

Anyone else here own the box set?

I got it for my birthday from my gf(she really knows how to get awesome gifts).

But its really great and I wish I could have been around to see a Saturn V lift off. Sure I saw the Ares 1X launch but.. thats not as cool as a Saturn V(and we know how O man killed that program)

But I think next thing to get is the dvd When We Left the Earth.

that and I need Band of Brothers on Blue Ray

I've got it! Love that show. Also The Right Stuff, great movie.

last year on the science channel they had Moon Machines another great show, the space program from the point of view of the engineers. (like a documentery of the episode about apollo 9) since I'm from a family of engineers, and I work for an engineer, it was very interesting to see how they did more with less back then. they had slide rules and went to the moon... we have CAD and are going to be hitching a ride to the space station with the Russians.

Amazing how the world works.

I'm gonna have to buy this
http://www.amazon.com/Moon-Machines-George-Phelps/dp/B0026IQTR2

My father worked on the LEM. I still have reams of paper documents of specifications and designs all mimeographed and bound into loose-leaf binders

I used to get into them as a kid and be amazed at the schematic drawings.

Thats awesome!!!!!! I bet he has some great stories!!

My dad knew a guy who worked as an engineer for Lockheed and worked on the skunkworks projects, he worked on the U2 and the SR-71. man that guy had great stories. sadly I was a kid when he was around and I couldn't tell any of them if I wanted to.

That's not bad, I normally buy DVDs from amazon or just buy the download (if it's available).

If you ever get the chance, have a look at the Australian film "The Dish". It gives some insight into the landing on the moon. It is a bit factually incorrect but there is a few original film clips in it. My father was the supervising engineer. After it was all over he went to the USA representing the Australian communications team. He was given an award for the team, my mother still has it. I am not sure who presented it to him. He passed away about 15 years ago.

He did have some cool stories of that time. He also worked on the first lasers and holograms. I have an old 8mm movie given to him by NASA with details about the Apollo Project and a lot of animation of the proposed space ships (they looked nothing like the actual ones ) One day I will get it put on a DVD.

Unfortunately he died in 1993.

From Earth to the Moon? I have a copy of the memorial edition along with four other Verne novels in that set. Printed around 1905. Not what you had in mind I expect.
