Well Craig picked up the car tonight so we hope that he'll pleased with it. What's not to like about a 2.24 to a 2.82 change???

If you change ratios, you do not need to change the instrument cluster. A gear ratio box is the right ticket. We sell them for $150. They're a medium-level DIY install. We preset it for the ratio change and you just need to install it. The speedo will be as accurate after the swap as it was before. If you want to get it calibrated at the same time, have a speedo shop do the whole installation.

We used to use North Hollywood Speedo ourselves, but they refused to do Craig's car as they weren't sure about the signal and speedo type. While they're VDO specialists they're not specialists on the various trannies and newer computer controls MB is putting in. We went ahead and did the speedometer adjustment and took the car to NH Speedo to check the speedo. It was perfect.

NOTE: gear ratio boxes do not work on the newer 5-spd 722.6 trannies. You need a reprogrammed ETC.

DO NOT install an ASR diff in a non-ASR car. You will no longer have ABS! All 500E's had ASR as standard.

A 350SDL diff will not work in a 400E with just changing the rear cover either. There's plenty of other differences. The gears are the right size but as usual there's more to it than that. Particularly if it's an ASD diff, run...

We love diff work at BergWerks, so feel free to call if you want to make a change.

Here's an update on the new 2.82 rear diff swap. I picked up my car on Friday night and all I can say is WOW!

My E420 really moves now. To me it seems most impressive if you nail it at about 15 to 20 mph. Double downshift and you are pinned in your seat as the tires dig in and the speedo climbs rapidly to 90.

Right after picking up the car I drove it cautiously until the tranny and engine were warm as I headed for the freeway onramp. My friend who dropped me off to pick up my car was behind me in his SL500. As we rounded the corner to merge into traffic, I'm sure he knew I was going to hit it, and he was ready also.

Luckily there was an open spot on the freeway, and away we went. As I looked in my rear view mirror, I was VERY suprised to see I was slowly pulling away from him. Now I'm not convinced that my car is faster, I just think that I got a jump in the gas before he did. I do think that our cars are very close in 0-60 times now .

So in general, WOW, FUN, WOW!

Thanks Carl.

Craig

Not sure if Carl has the rpm's at 60 but I think it was at 2400. I'll double check.

RPMs @ 60mph

That's right on Craig. They should be right at about 2,400 rpm, perhaps on the short side around 2,350.
