Yes Thor made great hammers because usually British equipment required a knock or two with it. The industrial revolution started there and is pretty good example that you NEED the best hammer blessed by the name of THOR

btw - that idler bearing greasing is good practice, I do that every year on whatever car I can get to it easily.
If I had more space I would have bought a second engine stand to work on this project - I'm drowning in spare parts here - spare parts and bicycles and scooters and other junk for the children. By Dutch standards I live in a generous living space but by needing space to fix your car standards it isn't all that great. Don't get me wrong I'm sure there are plenty of forum members who live in smaller areas than me - it is just that I'm trying to do something that realistically (with three children) I don't have the space for...

...in my new life I hope to have space for an old chest freezer that will be turned into a parts washer - and another chest freezer that will be turned into a media blast cabinet and an industrial sized dishwasher...

...and a milling machine and a lathe and a metal folding bench and an English wheel and decent steel work tables and...

...I'm not greedy!

(Smooth Hammerite this time!)
I used to use this stuff all the time, but I have to say I don't think it holds up well at all. Looks great (regular Hammerite) when new though.

This discussion on Thor hammers has me wondering what other crumbs of memory might be floating around waiting to pop out given prodding. I hadn't given Thor hammers a thought since 1976 when I sold that MGB.

I agree Hammerite is nice because you don't have to go through the whole POR-15 rigmarole (so much) but that's about it other than wide spread availability here and comparative low cost (comparing with the tourist rates applied to buying POR-15).

I reckon Hammerite lasts about as long as POR-15 when you don't go through the rigmarole of degreasing and pre-treating and washing and drying and then painting. Hammerite needs at least three coats though.

However - 'ammerite is not good to mix with normal automotive paint. It is uses MEK as a solvent and according to our resident paint expert (user JMK - and backed up by our one and only MikeD) that ain't so hot=>

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/body-repair-restoration/338365-por-15-gone-going-good-introducing-zinga-2.html

The other problem with Hammerite is that it looses its nice shine when exposed to UV. It goes all crumbly and white after a while.

What I'm using Hammerite for on the car is mainly suspension components - but because it is a 190e I'll be applying plasti-dip over the top of it for that banging hardcore you know the score look...

No progress recently - too much nasty stuff going on here occupying any spare time I've got at the moment.

I did see this posted by Skippy in this thread though

190D vs 190E

The Mighty 190 [Official Music Video] - YouTube

Just think - that'll be me soon! I can hardly wait...

...oh and I've just ordered some Sachs super touring shocks so perhaps I should have gone for the lower kit and the bilsteins...

I applaud your thoroughness. My baby truck, my little 2.5L DD, I only do what I have to when fixing stuff. Only the mating surfaces get cleaned, rust gets a shot of brake cleaner and rustoleum, chips in the body paint are touched up with nail polish Oh the horror!

Nail polish - good one! I've heard of filling in holes in walls (in rental properties) with toothpaste and then painting over but never thought of dressing up your car like a tart's hand bag!

My recent W210 purchase came with 2 genuine MB geprufte qualitat nail polish bottles - one is a paint coat and one is a clear coat

Yep it looks like a pain in the arse to remove with the engine in place so I may as well get on with it "seeing as I'm in there already" (see above)

"Scope creep" - not that there is anything wrong with that.

I'll be using that phrase some time in the near future...I just don't know when.

Stretch, we need to get you a carb'd small block Chevy. You can let those things go forever-they will run wrong for a long long time(at 6-10mpg)

...so you have one and want Strech to document taking it to bits before you start?
