Lacquer Thinner, if you can buy it any more...
If that is the Bosch K-Jetronic F.I. system, I had that in a V.W. in the 80's and lacquer thinner worked well and I never had any seal issues.

I don't think fluid changes would have prevented failure...
The transmission received a fluid change at 80k. But I don't believe that service or frequency of it is the reason that bearing fails. From what I've seen, the filter on this tranny is substantial...
