Yup, that's it. Chrome is just a "varnish", really, and it deteriorates, if not very carefully kept up. With some peeling and pitting, the tire doesn't keep a good seal, and a slow lead developes....

Red Hot Cat!!

While trying to figure out why our 75 450 SL was runing awful, I noticed today that the right side catalytic converter was glowing red hot! Now, I'm guessing that this is not the preferred condition....
