After spending an hour filing the rust out of the hub, and trying to make a puller out of a bolt from the hardware store and washers (which ended up stripped), I lightly filed down the axle spline....

My guess would be condensation from the A/C or rain water. The sound panel under the engine seems to hold water and slowly let it drip off. So you probably wont see it drip off as soon as you get out...

It's not that the delivery valves get clogged up, its that they are not torqued down correctly. If the motor mounts/shocks, rack dampener, air cleaner, etc. all check out good, re-torque the valves....

It sounds like you really want the '87 300d. Don't let the 617 guys talk you out of it. The '87 300d with the 603 3.0L motor is not high maintainance or troublesome and gets 30+mpg on the highway....
