Thanks all for the input! Looks like there is no advantage to using a dam gasket unless required. I'll see what my engine number is and take it from there.

To me it depends on how long you expect to keep and use it. In years. I swore off B&S years ago and have had nothing but good service with Honda, and Kohler. If none of that matters, go cheap.
