So it had 287K miles on it two years ago?

70F at the vents won't cut it in Houston but maybe it only needs a charge (or recharge with updated refrigerant).

Unhappy My wife won't part with the Jetta TDI, so

I'd need a pretty compelling reason to get rid of my Golf TDI. It's solid, a blast to drive, and has averaged 47 mpg. I do most of the maintenance myself on both cars. There is economy of scale...
