Had the same thing happen to my '79 300D when I was a kid and it belonged to my dad. They chewed up several vacuum lines under the hood causing all kinds of problems. Luckily, it was easy to repair once the damage was found. Electrical would have been more trouble. Never had one in the air filter housing though. I imagine they would get quite a surprise being in there when that engine is fired up.

Squirrels/chipmunks don't want to mess under my hood, the ranch is always busy and the horses are always hard at work.....

Yes, my dad's 300E was chewed up by some rats under the hood in So. CA.

I don't recall what he ended up replacing.

i mentioned it before, if you are able to open the hood slightly, they will avoid the under hood area, their private place is no longer when the hood is up.

I had about 10 pounds of nuts above my hood pad after my SD sat all summer long.

My favorite is when they get into exhuast ports on boats! Quite a show when the engines light off in the spring, those poor rodents go for a bit of a ride.

My wife called me at work one day to inform me that there was a squirrel in my car. I asked her to open the door. She was afraid. Little f*cker wrecked all my near perfect elephant skin trim.

I noticed a day later my gas can had the same marks on it. Little shi*t got high on gas and went at my car. GGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

I park "the fleet" near the fence line of my property, and next door is about 13 acres of nothing but brush and trees.
Even with the cat leaving dead rats on the front porch almost every other night the little field mice get in the cars from time to time.
Last spring I put those little poison filled D-Con boxes under the seats. Started finding little green mouse droppings in the cars so I knew their days were numbered.
Well, one crawled up somewhere in the white wagon and died. Geez Louise it was almost 3 months before I could drive that car again. Literally!!
A year later I still haven't found the corpse. Have had dash and seats out a couple times......
