Talking Avatars are Great Fun!!

If anyone has noticed the variety of avatars on my postings today, its 'cause I'm having too much fun playing with them.

I hope to settle down on one choice soon...thanks for your patience!

Kerry: Just save a small GIF file (65x65 pixels) of your choice and import it on your member profile page!!

Help, need a computer ex-spurt

Intersting I would see this thread at this time. I just had to make a bunch of option changes at mercedesshop due to the following problem:
When viewing a thread that I have a response to, my computer would begin downloading the thread. It would get close to having completed the entire download, although the blue bar at the bottom of my screen would only have moved less than 1/4 of the way. Then, where the symbol showing the 2 computers are, the "screens" on the computer would be showing no color. I take this to be some sort of "communication" taking place between my computer and my ISP. At any rate, after 5 seconds or so of showing no activity, my computer then loses it's connection to the net and I have to reconnect and start over, hitting the refresh button after logging on again. Not all posts or threads act this way, seems like it's more likely to happen the more I have contributed to a thread that I am trying to access.
The changes I have made, which seems to have helped, are as follows:
"Browse board with cookies" changed to no
"Show users signatures in their posts" changed to no
"Show users avatars in their posts" changed to no
Show image attachments and [img] code changed to no
and also changed "default posts per thread" to "show 5 posts per page"
Any thoughts? If my computer busticated or what? Any suggestions on how to fix it?
Gilly

Kerry:

The animated avatars are gif files that are strung together as an animated gif in a program like photoshop or fireworks. Just like a moving picture, animations are basically a string of still shots that are strung together with a time constant to show each still picture in succession, and set to either reverse or repeat at the end so it doesn't stop. It is limited mostly by the file size limitation of the avatar feature. my old avatar is 6 different still gif pictures set to each display in sequence for a 1/4 second, pause, reverse, and repeat. A 3D is the same thing. Always limited by the Avatar size settings, though, so I can't have a full page avatar of 300SL Gullwing driving up, raising the door, and showing Leise smiling and waving! It would be fun to play with the front of a 500E and have it appear as a dot in the page, and accelerate towards the viewer, then fais out to background and repeat! Maybe I'll give that a try!

Gilly:

It sounds more like a problem with your ISP, although turning off the cookies will usually make loading slower, and sometimes allow connections to 'time out', especially if it is a dial up connection instead of cable or DSL.

JCE:
I've thought of that too. I know just about (not quite) but just about enough about computers to get into trouble.
Seems like this is the only site I'm having trouble with. I can download a whole page of stuff on Ebay for example and never have a problem.

Thank you for the concise brief, John.

If someone asked me which was my favourite, it has to be the 3 pointed star going round and round. Perhaps there ought to be a thread on this ...

Gilly - hope your problem would be sorteed out in due course.

Good day to all ....

Gilly,

Same thing happens to me when I'm viewing the site from work. At the office we have Netscape and there seems to be, for lack of bettrr terms, a conflict with that browser, often take several minutes to load a page completely. At home I run IE and seldom have a slowdown/dissconnect. When it does happen at the house, the problem lies with my ISP and their connections.
