I change my rear axle, front axle and t case and tranny oil every 10,000 miles. Good protection and insurance, oil is cheaper to replace on regular basis than mechanical parts. The sulphur in mineral gear oil acts as etching compound to etch the gear oil in between the high friction areas, forms a protective layer.

I have read the complaint about axle noise after changing the fluid. Can anyone shed more light on this subject?

JP,

I haven't yet diagnosed it. I was working on another repair this past weekend, but will check the fluid level this week.

My dad also suggested that the EZLube could have replaced it with a different viscosity lube, possibly contributing to wear.

I'll post more as I learn more.

Justin

Is axle oil different than differential oil? I was under the impression that the oil in the differential flowed out to the end sof the axles.

Not on independent suspension vehicles.

Addative

The 107 manual says to add an addative for limited slip differentials to eliiminate gear noise. I bought some at Pep Boys when I bought the fluid. I dont know which models had limited slip. Don't you always wonder when you have others do the work?

Weird, but true: I know that early GM Positraction axle oil contained whale oil (but not anymore, obviously)!

It took many years to engineer a suitable, "lifetime" substitute.
